jack up and safely go under neath vehicle and check the shift selector connection if good check cable /linkage from tranny to selector for proper connections and operations if good --try moving selector if moves try to put in neutral if hard to move or selector wont move possible internal gear damage
I don't think a 1983 model would have much connected between the trans and the computer like models built since 2000. If you only have second gear in any drive position, I would think something is stuck in the trans. I'm assuming you have checked the fluid level.
I recently had that issue with my 99 intrepid. I changed the input and output speed sensors. they cost 130. for both. and now it no longer gets stuck in 2 nd gear and drives more smooth.
You may need to drop the transmission pan and take a look at the parking paw mechanism. You might want to disconnect the shifter linkage and see if it will shift into the other gears.
I had the exact similar problem four years ago with my 1999 Firebird. they replaced one of my headlamp motor wich solved the problem. had not problem since.
My Dodge Intrepid 99 is stuck in he drive position. The gear wont go back to park or neutral or anything. I was looking for the shift release cable but can't locate it. Can someone please help.
