I'm not sure how many miles you have, but if it is like mine, you need to take your XC-90 to your dealer and ask them to check if there is radiator fluid in your transmission. Volvo has a recall on certain models where the cooler for the transmission leaks into the radiator and it will cause the transmission to fail. Volvo just put a new transmission in my XC-90 at their cost :)

What could be causing my car to surge when I put it in reverse and sometimes in park?

Surging is usually associated with a fuel/air fault, or maybe a leak in the vacuum pipe.

However, I do believe that the XC90 may suffer from a transmission fault. Have a look on the following links:

My steering wheel on my volvo locked and now the key won't turn xc90 2006

Try pulling the wheel in both directions, one at a time, and turning the key while you do it. I believe the steering wheel lock is exerting pressure on your ignition system (where the key is). You should feel (& possibly hear) it when the lock releases enough pressure to let you turn the key.

Xc90 engine system service required

Hi if the error code is p0075 then its the Intake valve timing control solenoid valve is activated by ON/OFF pulse duty (ratio) signals from the Engine Control Module I would recommend you take the xc90 to a Volvo specialist or a main dealer if the car is running ok & not gone into limp mode it may be a simple reset hope this helps

Volvo xc90 headrest removal

You have to feel from the back of the seat push trough the leather and feel for the detents. You can do one side at a time. Put your hand under the head rest and apply pressure upwards as you push in the detent with the other hand. Its no fun. one you get past both detents it just slides up.

I installed many tv systems when i was a volvo tech.

Reverse engages HARD!!!

Check for trans codes then I would suggest a fluid change if there are no trouble codes, many times these kinds of problems are caused by a little piece of dirt causing a shift solenoid to stick.
