Short in seat heater (2001 Audi S4)

When I turn on the seat heater, it only heats a part of the seat, none of the back rest, and then eventually will get one buring hot spot. Needless to say, I haven't used it since, but knowing that the new seat heater assembly is C$800 (just for the part!), is there another solution?
Would it be cheaper to find a sed seat to replace it with?
If so, anyone know where one might look? I need black leather...

Thanks, and much appreciated!

SOURCE: 2001 Audi S4 Heater doesn't work

Thermostat has failed (stuck open) and needs replacement. It's a big job (5-6 hours charged labor for a shop), and requires the front of the car to be removed. Here's a pic of my car (B5 A4) a few weeks ago when I changed mine:

There's no way around it either - removing the front of the car is the only way to access it.

SOURCE: Can i put heated leather seats into my Audi A6

The wireing harness may already be there but the controls are not. You can install them but it will never be factory and can cause problems if it is not installed properly.

Heated seats

Test heated seat circuits. Most likely, a burned out seat heater element. Check for power at the seat heater element connector to verify. If there is no power at the connector, then the rest of the system must be diagnosed to find out why.
