Check the reason for the engine light coming on as it is serious and not to be ignored. Run fault codes.

SOURCE: Hey. Over the past few

Most common problem with intermittent check engine light on these type of vehicle is 02 Oxygen sensors especially when it goes on and off. one a few occasions I've seen the need for a tune-up bad spark plugs wires/air filter etc. Best thing to do is to get it check by a some scan tool with odb 2. You can go to Auto-zone they do this check for free. Godd Luck

Drop in to an Autozone, or Pep Boys, or similar big parts store & they will usually scan for codes free. This will hopefully eliminate all the guess work, or at least point everyone in right direction for better diagnosis. If not obvious from codes what the problem is, get back to us and we'll help you out.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the great suggestion . I'll have Autozone read the codes on Monday. Thanks again!"

It might be your coolant temp. sensor-not the sender for your dash gauge, but the sensor that tells the computer the engine temp. I'd also replace the spark plugs. If they have a sooty, black coating your engine is running rich. Does the engine light still come on? If same code, you need to check that circuit out more fully.

Idle speed control valve located on your throttle body. It has the engine searching for idle, internal plunger is not backing down. This will cause the check engine light to light . if you wont, i think they still offer free check engine light checks at auto zone, i now they still do around here

Engine light keeps coming on. and when I did test they said bank 1 and bank 2 is running rich. what does this usually mean. Dealer says it is safe to drive until I get it fix, but I am burning alot of gas...

What that means, as you have noticed, is that you have a problem with the vehicle which is causing the computer to deliver more fuel than needed to the engine. Running Rich = too much fuel. Running Lean = too little fuel. There are many reasons why your engine would be running rich, and could be anything from a malfunctioning sensor to a vacuum leak to a leak in the exhaust ahead of the oxygen sensor.

You can drive it while running rich temporarily, but it can cause issues with fouling the spark plugs and damaging the catalytic converter over time.

Coolant sensor may be the problem. It is located near the thermostat housing. It may be sticking between modes & not operating properly. Also make sure coolant is circulating in system.
