Our 1998 Ford windstar has went all EXORCIST in dash board etc.

Our 1998 Ford windstar started with this problem when my husband was driving down the road and the van died right in the middle of driving he barely got it to the side of the road. Next he tried to start it and nothing did not turn over make noise anything headlights went out also and yet the dash lights and radio still worked. I went to help my husband tow it home and I started trying to start it and the dash board went all exorcist on me and the gauges and light symbols were going on and off and needles on the gauges going up and down and then clicking noise coming from the dash area.....So I started checking for burned fuses because the headlights were out and I did find one replaced it and the headlights came back on and so I jumped in to see if it would start it DID so I drove home as fast as I could so we wouldn't have to TOW IT ...........got home and turned it off and tried it again STARTED then turned it off and tried it again NOTHING but Dash board started to get all weird and blinking and needles moving all rapidly and clicking noise coming from the area of the dash......Replaced the fuse again and this time just started it and it STARTED then I turned the dimmer up and down it was fine then I turned the headlights on and it died the van stopped running then the dash did the weird thing again so we had concluded that it was a bad headlight switch I replaced it .The van ran perfect for 2 days and looked like the problem was over then the 3rd day went out to drive it and the same thing happened but this time the clicking noise is there even if I don't have the key in the ignition and the dash is all weird and put key in and not turning over at all but other things still have power radio etc. no fuses are burned out this time. I am at a lose for where to start looking could it be the ignition or a fuse a short or Will I need to save up some money and just take it into FORD any help would greatly be appreciated ........Thanks

At the minimum, since you mentioned all the idiot lights coming on, your alternator is fried. have someone put in a new alternator. if it's still acting up, have someone go over the computer.

98 ford windstar no dash and tail lights

you have to check all fuses with a test light both fuse boxes under hood and under dash... if good next to look for is the light switch itself... has any radio work been done to the lately... if so alot of times hooked up wrong will blow park fuse as one of the wires to radio is the park voltage to tell radio to dim down some

Starter issues with 98 Ford Windstar (3.8)

one problem that the 98 winstars ( 3,8L ) are prone to is the transmission range sensor. they are badly located and not well sealed. As a result corosion...
The starter solenoid wire ( red/ light blue ) runs throught the range sensor before reaching the ignition switch.
Try shifting back and forth between Park and L1 rapedly at least 5, 6 times and then try starting in Neutral.
If it starts the TRS is easy to replace and accesible.
( The TRS is also responsible for the transmission going into irradical kick down mode )
