Steam is white smoke, usually. Check to see if there is green (from antifreeze) stains anywhere near the cool/cold engine around this area you see the 'smoke'

FORD FOCUS LOSING COOLANT SUDDENLY

Check for white smoke out the exhaust. If you have white smoke then you are burning coolant and probably have a blown headgasket. Another way for checking a blown headgasket is to open the coolant overflow tank and run the car. If you see constant bubbles in the coolant then you have a blown headgasket.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR IF the gasket it blown as the engine will overheat and the cylinder head can warp/crack.

If there is no white smoke from the exhaust and no bubbles in the coolant system there is probably jsut a leak in the coolant system, visually check all the pipes and check around the waterpump housing for leaks. If you can't see a leak then pressure test the coolant system. A pressure test will push coolant out the leak and should help you find where it is.

Hope this helps

I have white white smoke coming from under the coolant tank, when starting the car cold in the morning, driver side

I was going to say that white smoke wouldn't be oil but I see that you figured that out. Look for loose coolant hose clamps on or near the reservoir or possibly a small crack in the reservoir itself. As a general rule for gasoline engines: White smoke = coolant, Blue smoke = oil, Gray smoke = fuel, Black smoke = "Uh oh, that can't be good." :-)

I keep putting coolant in my 97 jeep cherokee. It isn't leaking, and I checked the oil and its not leaking into the oil either.. could this be the water pump or what?!

Could be waterpump. There's a small "weep" hole in bottom of waterpump. (it's an early warning system to catch seal leak before pump bearing seizes) Check closely lower side of pump and also check pass side floor/carpet for possible heater core leak. You're not seeing white smoke from exhaust are you... if so, might be head gasket leak.

2001 Volvo s40 oil leaking in turbo, smokes white smoke and turbo not kicking in. I have a new head, timing belt waterpump, oxygen sens. valve job, cam pulley all changed. It is still smoking and no turbo....

Water in combustion chamber makes white smoke--suspect that the head gasket is leaking water into the chamber. If oil leaking around turbo, it may have a bad bearing and bad oil seal. Check waste gate valve and control.

Overheating blowing smoke

Your problem is a blown head gasket .You will need to have the gasket replaced . It would also pay to get the head crack tested and if it is ok get it machined or skimmed as it could be warped.
Consider replacing the waterpump and timing belt along with tensioner and idler.Make sure the thermostat is replaced also.Get the radiator cleaned as well.
Hope this helps
