I had a problem with the neutral safety switch, I got it hot stuck in snow drift. I replaced it but still cant get engine to turn over from key, I attached an exciter wire to the starter now I can start it by jumping from battery with key on. But it will not start from turning ignition. I am wondering if it is a problem in the transmission maybe or is it the ignition switch. Thanks Dwayne
Test for power to the neutral safety switch first to see if a signal comes from your ignition switch . Hook a test light or voltage meter to the wire from the ignition switch into the neutral switch even wiggling the ignition switch a little to see if it try's to start . Try moving/ wiggling the gear selector in park or neutral while cranking the ignition to see if the neutral switch has intermittent contact .
Can you be a little more specific about the neutral safety switch?

There is either a cable not getting a very good connection, solenoid has problems, or there is a wiring leading to a relay that has a bad connections. How is your ignition? Is it loose or have loose wires?
also check the magnetic switch mounted on the starter housing, is supplied by
current from the starting switch circuit of the ignition switch. This
magnetic action of the switch mechanically engages the starter clutch
assembly and electrically closes the heavy switch which connects it to
the battery. The starting switch circuit consists of the starting
switch contained within the ignition switch, a transmission neutral
safety switch or clutch pedal switch, and the wiring necessary to
connect these in series with the starter solenoid or relay.

Your problem is a faulty starter solenoid relay.
It is staying in the POWER ON position.
The relay is located under the hood near the power distribution panel (fusebox) i believe.
Consult your owners manual or Repair manual for exact location.

Just a thought , if the gear stick is not in park the key cannot be removed from the ignition I found out when I left the car in nuetral .

you need to see how far the power is getting through the circuit. you will need a volt meter and maybe a friend to help. so start at the small wire on the starter. this should have power when you turn the ignition key. no power? then move to starter relay, no power? then move to neutral safety switch, still no power? ignition switch and fuse or fusable link or fuse box connection, wire connections. just approach it like water flowing though a pipe- but somewhere on the pipe there is a break in the pipe (circuit).
You can jump relays or switches just to prove to yourself that the starter can turn over.

I had the same problem with my 99 corolla. It was the solenoid contacts in the starter...they were worn down and didn't either get enough contact or sometimes kind of melt togther (that's why starter spins even after you turn off car and key). Got new contacts and car starts like new!
