That is an extremely broad subject you have on your hands. you could have up to 50 odd issues leading to it not starting.

to troubleshoot this you need to know an engine needs oxygen, fuel and spark to burn alongside compression. but if its compression your out of luck.

the barebones simplistic options are below

first to check is spark. simply get a spark plug socket and locate your spark plugs, tear one off and get someone to try turning it over while holding the spark plug plugged into the lead against the motor nearest to the hole you just took it out of while being able to see it. if you see little blue flashes you are getting spark.

second issue can be fuel if it has spark, simply smell the hole you just pulled the plug out of. chances are you are going to smell exactly what you usually smell while refuelling. if there is no or a weak fume smell its likely fuel. if it is getting ample fuel the smell should have you just about reeling away from the car from the strength. if you do not wish to smell then find your LONG kitchen lighter and light it up then get someone to turn it over a few cranks with the lighter over the spark plug hole holding it to one side. it should give you a quick brief burst of fire as the petrol burns off. do not look over the top of the hole as the burst of fire can easily reach 3-4 feet away from the engine.

third issue is oxygen. remove the air filter and check for extremely serious buildup of grime. if removed and engine still does not fire then it has become an electrical issue not a mechanical issue and that is best left to pro auto electricians.

what exactly was the car performing like immediately before the car stopped starting? was it shuddering? sluggish? pulsating?

SOURCE: The lights on my dash board flicker on and off then turn off.

I had the same problem some time ago, lights would go on and off, odometer appeared to stop counting at times rpm gauge would work and then not... power steering would off and on work and head lights would blink on and off when in driving light mode (off position).. The fix for me was I had to have the dash computer replaced (about $500). After doing this around 50k miles ago all the gremlins seem to have remained gone.. Hope this helps

Why is my temperature gauge not working?

Chrysler has made major advancements in their technology that is based on 1991 platform, however they still suffer old school problems, if you have an incomplete Ground circuit it will cause odd reactions and rare is the case that 2 identical vehicles will give the same reaction ( dimming in lights on the dash, faulty gauge readings, delayed or extended cranking engine starts, eventually engine control module failure ). Also upgrades such as the stereo or on Board GPS unit and not putting the ground wire back on ( this is the Dash to Chassis Ground circuit that is completed through the antenna thus creating a noise reduction filter by proxy of power flow ). This can even be caused by nothing more than a dirty connection at the battery.

A red light on the dash board

The warning lights should be listed in your owners manual. It could be a warning for one of the gauges, or engine/transmission problems.
They are more common on Toyota Prius.

No dash lights when headlights are turned on. Everything works fine on my vehicle EXCEPT today the panel lights don't work. Turn signals, hazard blinker, oil gauge, rpm gauge, speedometer, drive shift...

there is a regulator for the display brightness, you may have it turn'd down or it has stopped working;. it controls the brightness at which the dash lights are. usually has a speedo sign on it. goes up and down. it works with the main light and is conecter to them on the same lighting board if it has gone then a new light swtch control switch will be needed.

1999 VW Cabrio dash light

Obviously it's temperature gauge light. Check for coolant level first. Then check for coolant leak. If coolant is leaking out of your car, the lower coolant levels in your engine will cause it to overheat. If you have your heater on and it starts blowing hot air instead of cool, your engine is low on coolant. This will cause to flash a warning light on your car's dashboard.

Hi i have a volkswagon golf which the abs sensor light is on and another yellow light is on in the dash and sometimes it beeps and the red handbrake light will flash. also my speed clock doesnt work at any...

firstly you need a new sensor or drive on the gearbox ,its located above the passenger side drive shaft where the diff is ,change this first so it works then see if the ABS light goes out ,temperature gauge could just be a faulty sender unit on the engine .If the ABs light still doesnt go when speedo is repaired then check the sensors with a automotive meter and also check the toothed gear ring on each wheel as they do sometimes crack and come loose on the drive shaft .This fault will also throw the brake warning lights on for this vehcle

I'm having a problem in my 2000 Dodge stratus. I replaced the plugs and wires but there's something wrong with the idle. I don't have a check engine light and nobody seems to know what is wrong with it. It...

The coolant temperature sensor on the 2.4L DOHC engine, (which I will assume you have) has 2 functions, one is to send temperature to dash gauge, the other is to send signal to PCM . That signal changes when cold, which results in PCM sending a little richer mixture (more) of fuel to engine and speeds up idle until engine gets warmer, or normal operating temperature. It should be located right under housing where upper rad hose attaches to engine.

2001 dodge stratus engine temperature gauge spikes occasionally

Look for a loose connection to the temperature sender unit on the motor.
If all connections OK, you may need a new temp sender unit.
