What makes a 2004 cevy cavalier sputters off and on until you reach 50mph?

Scan for check engine codes, sounds like you are having a misfire problem. Common causes include clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, worn out spark plugs, failing sensors, weak ignition coils or spark plug wires....etc.

Engine is sputtering / cutting out. Especially once you get up to speed 40-50mph on the lower end of the RPM's, it starts to **** it cuts out so bad.

Is your check engine light on? If so, scan for trouble codes. Also, check for vacuum leaks, distributor cap & rotor.

I have a 1968 baja bug that doesnt exceed 50mph in 4th gear and i have the pedal floored I am stumped at this one and the engine doesnt sputter, but has a hard time getting up to 50 mph.

What gear ratio does it have? Especially a baja set up has low gears and won't do 50 - 60 no matter how hard you push it. That is most assuredly the problem.
