Dificulty in starting hot or cold. The engine turns over and start firing uo then dies. On the second attempt it starts but like a carburettor that's flooding. Whe it starts the engine runs smooth, no power loss even fuel consumption is good. I checked the charging system - not faulty. I replaced sparkplugs and all filters but still doing the same.

SOURCE: 98 chevy suburban engine turns over but wont start.

did you do a fuel pressure test? or did you just push in on the valve on the fuel rail and gas came out? if thats all you did, that will not tell you anything.you GOT to do a pressure test. just 3 to 5 pounds under and it will not run. fuel injection is fussey. you can rent a pressure gage at most major parts stores. they can even tell you what the pressure shoud be. just because you can hear the pump run, dosent mean its pumping, or at least the right pressure. did you also chk.for spark? need to do that to. still need air, fuel, and fire to make them run. good luck.

SOURCE: do you adjust the tps sensor on a 94 ford f250 5.8l when replaced

Best thing to do with a vehicle that you don't have any idea where the timing is supposed to be is something I discovered when I was a mobile mechanic. Loosen the distributor a little. Block the front tires and maybe even place the front bumper against something solid like a building. Put the truck in drive and hold the brakes down.Preferably have someone else do it while you are under the hood. slowly start raing engine speed. When it starts to stumble, move the distributor just a little one way or the other till it runs better. Once it does clears up, put a little more throttle to it. See if it keeps up. It may get to a point your back wheels will want to burn rubber. Once it does, let of the gas fast. If it dies, you have problems. Then you'll do what I said in the beginning and take it to your dealer to plug into it. Dealer, parts house, whatever. If it stay running good. You may have found the timing point. Good luck. If this is helpful, please post as such. If it is a fixya....you know.TY

93 toyota pickup 4x4 it will stay running after I turn it on to start it up, it starts up then after a few seconds it kills

if I'm reading this right...
... the engine starts and dies within a few seconds.
... you jumpered the fuel pump test connector and it will keep running.
... you smell fuel after trying to re-start when it dies.

Disconnect the plug to the cold start injector. Even if you have an issue with the engine running then dying after a few seconds after doing this, if you don't smell fuel after disconnecting the cold start injector and try to restart it, the cold start time injector time switch may be failing.

Buy a can of starting fluid and have someone start the engine then spray short bursts of the fluid around all the intake fittings. If spraying the fluid in any particular area keeps the engine running, I'd start looking for leaks around that area.

It does sound like an AFM or COR issue considering it dies after a few seconds, but the fuel smell when trying to restart the engine may be a separate issue that needs corrected / isolated first.it will keep running.

Its a hot start issue.

Can be related to low fuel pressure or problem with crank sensor.

Also it can be weak battery or starter.

2003 F250 Super Duty diesel 6.0 needs multiple tries to start.

Are you getting white smoke or no smoke from the exhaust after failed start attempts?
When the FICM was replaced, did Ford check the glow plugs and injectors for proper operation?
Are you using an engine oil heating element or is the engine dead cold when this happens?
How long does the engine run the first and second start attempts before it stalls and dies?

I AM RESTORING A T020 MF. I REPLACED ALL WIRING AND IGNITION SYSTEM AND REBUILT THE CARBURATOR, AND ADJUSTED IT TO SPECS. I GOT IT TO START RIGHT AWAY AND IT SOUNDS GREAT. HOWEVER, IT WILL ONLY RUN FOR...

Ok a quick check. When the engine cuts out and you go for restart it dies within 5 seconds. Next time put the ignition at position 2 (on but not starting) and wait one minute, then start the car. If the engine again runs for 30 seconds before cutting off this tells you its is a fuel problem. If the fuel is supplied slowly it fills the carburettor fuel bowls and when the car starts it quickly uses up these local reservoirs of fuel faster than they can be replenished. When you try to restart immediately there is only a tiny amount of fuel and so it used up almost immediately. By leaving the ignition on 2 for while it gives the pump time to fill the carburettor bowls and this takes a while longer to run down when the engine starts. Just before moving on does the car have a choke OK remove the low tension connection to the coil, basically remove any chance of a spark. Put a big old towel around the carb. Now remove the fuel line at the carburettor and put ignition on 2 to engage the starter pump. Listen to pump operation and look at the rate of fuel being pushed from the disconnected fuel pipe. If the flow is slow check on pump and filters.

5.7 Hemi won't start in cold weather.

Cold weather makes the engine hard to start for two main reasons. First, oil thickens when it's cold, which increases friction and makes it harder for the starter motor to spin the engine. Cold also slows the chemical reaction in the car's battery, reducing its power output. Battery output is usually rated at 77°F, below which starting power drops drastically.

You can ensure that your car will start in the worst weather by keeping the engine or the battery, or both, warm.

You may want to consider a trickle charger for the battery to keep the chemical reaction working and an engine block heater to make it easier for the pistons to move freely.
