1998 idles too high at startup when cold SOHC 4.0 ford explorer

My 1998 Ford Explorer idles way too fast when it's cold. After it is warm it idles 750 to 850 RPM's , it's like an automatic chock on an old ford when you have to kick the gas pedal to release the chock. My truck idles fast for 4 to 5 min it never did this before. I'm lost... That's all any help? [email protected]

Try spraying carb/throttle body cleaner around the throttle body after the truck is warmed up all the way get someone to sit in the truck with it in drive and there foot on the brake if the idle raises there's a vacuum line leaking or your throttle body gasket is leaking if no increase in idle then thoroughly clean out the throttle body with the spray if it's very dirty inside the varnish from the fuel burning is causing the throttle plate to stick or stay open causing your engine to have increased rpms if your using no name brand gas stop now your killing your motor the major brands have detergents in the gas to keep things clean and better mpgs brands like usa Valero speedway delta liberty are all garbage and should only be used in an emergency situation like you're going to run out also if you are using this junk get 2 cans of Berrimans fuel system cleaner and put it in the gas tank every week for a month or so this will clean out the emissions and gas tank of the dirt and varnish from bad cheap gas I say 2 at a time because the super strength is needed to clean out the gunk and keep using it at least 1 can a month with good higher grade fuel 93 octane for about 2 months after then either stay at 93 or go to 91 or 89 not 87 ///// now the reason for the higher octane fuel is this the higher the octane level the slower the fuel burns and cleaner more efficient burning with the cleaner combination to get out the gunk your truck will run much better and mpgs will increase now post back with progress write down everything you've done and we will take it from there if the problem persists but I don't think so I'm a taxi mechanic in nyc.with 50 years experience so that's where the information is coming from and a lot of the cars have 300,000 to 450,000 miles on them so I would say you should listen to this advice they are ford crown Victorias and are original motors good luck stephen

A thermostat opening too quickly or stuck open can cause a longer warm up period and higher idle time . A ECT coolant temperature sensor that is old or contaminated will cause longer high idle times . A dirty throttle body causes lower idle speeds, stalling and rough idling .

If the throttle plate is sticking open then the throttle position sensor will be sending a signal for higher idle it's when the vacuum lines connected to the throttle body get clogged that's when the stalling happens otherwise in cold weather the mix of heat from the engine rising up and the moisture from the outside air Will loosen it up with the throttle lever return spring tension this vehicle is not stalling all the time only racing at high idle a little bit longer then normal and also could be the colder temperatures causing the longer idle time and possible low level of antifreeze not reaching the temperature sender as fast as it normally would happen and the thermostat opening later to

SOURCE: 1998 ford explorer speed senors

for the 1998 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 EFI (not the SOHC), the speed sensor is located on top of the rear diff. and it is a magnetic one, you won't find it at autoparts store, i ordered it straight from the dealership. cost me $550 MXN ($37 USD)

and if what person above suggest didn't work, try doing a simple tranny tune up by changing the filter and oil...it workd for me.

problem is nobody can fix this issue for you your vehicle needs to have the key/computer programmed so the vehicle will start.

the security system thinks that you are using the wrong key to start the vehicle.
there is how ever a quick solution if you have other keys on your key ring, remove them as they may be interfering with the signal.
if it still does not start you however will need to find a dealership to fix your issue as ford is the only one that can program keys/computer.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.

1998 ford explorer with a rich/lean code

I would check for a vacuum leak somewhere. Like the post for the pcv hoses and elbows to the intake manifold gaskets not sealing. Check with at scan tool the fuel trims to see how the engine is running. If the long term fuel trim is over 10 % then there is a vacuum leak. It is rare for a lean running bank and at the same time a rich running bank. The only thing that could be possible cause for that would be the mass air flow sensor or the hose to the throttle body is not sealing causing unwanted air to get passed the MAF. These engines have a problem when it is cold the manifold gaskets not sealing and then when the engine is warm to seal and the fuel trims be high when cold and then be normal after it warms up

98 explorer 4.0 SOHC wont idle and stalls when weather is below 40 degrees. worse when colder. Just had tune up, new airfilter new fuel filter but problem did not get better.

you have a bad idle air control valve. its job is to have motor rpm high until the motor warms up then turn it back to normal.

2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC revs high on cold start and then shuts off

sounds like a bad idle air control valve. it is like a choke it has the motor run high and then when the motor is warm it idles normal

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer, 2wd, 4.0L SOHC 6cyl. It won't idle when cold. Once it's warm, it runs fine. Codes coming up is running lean. Could it be my coolant temp sensor?

Check for vacuum leaks. this is the main cause for lean codes. Definitely not the coolant sensor. Let me know there are other things also.

Wheni Start up it idles high an taps mostly in the morning and it stops when it warms up wats wrong 1998 Ford Explorer 2wd 4.0 Auto 4dr

If it is the SOHC engine, then your timing chain guides are ready to fail. Even though it is a 98, you may still get them replaced under the recall by Ford. Otherwise, they need to be replaced before they fail completely, as it will go from a $600 job to a $2500 job. The valvetrain will be destroyed if they fail.

This is a common problem with the 4.0 SOHC engine.

Hello,
Very common concern with the Explorer, Explorer Sport Trac and Ranger with the 4.0l SOHC engine! The upper and lower intake manifold gaskets fail, causing vacuum leaks..It can be Extremely difficult to detect these leaks, because they only leak intermittently (usually in the AM after a cold soak)... As the engine warms up they seal back up! Sometimes the vehicle will idle rough, surge or stall after initial start up, then the symptoms will clear after it gets to operating temperature... Usually there will be no driveability symptoms at all, except the engine light coming on and setting lean codes.. The gaskets have been redesigned to correct this concern..
