well to make sure it is the laternator start the car and pull the positive battery cable. if the car dies it is the alternator. and usually even on the new cars. it is easy to get to. just look at the front of the hood for the belt diagram and it will tell you how to release the belt.

You do need an alternator. Nissan has a campaign on Maxima alternator in certain years such as 96-98 I believe. Go to your friendly Nissan dealer abd have them punch your VIN number into the NNA net. they will know and that will tell them if your vehicle applies by the VIN. I have seen the alternator on fire. There was fire inside of the alternator. Have it checked or the car can catch on fire.

Having worked for an Isuzu dealer I have seen this a lot with aftermarket alternators from places like auto-zone, napa etc. For some reason they will do strange things in these vehicles. The fix was to get a Isuzu alternator. We did have good luck with Beck Arnly alternators also. We also had a local rebuilder repair some with good luck too. If all else fails get a used one.

In some 1999/2000 Cougars the wire between the battery and the voltage regulator(altenator) had a resistance reading that is too high. Ford has issued an TSB 00-25-6 that has instructions on how to replace this wire. The part # for the replacement wire is
1S8Z-14A411-AA. I'm in Michigan and a local dealer found one for me in South Bend,IN
