SOURCE: how to replace front wheel bearing on a 1996 ford aerostar

You knock the seal and races out with a drift. You put the new races and seals in by using something round, like a socket, to drive them in. Of course, the experts will say you must have special seal drivers and bearing race drivers, but I've been fixing my Fords for 40 years and I have done several of these with what I had laying around.

SOURCE: 2004 Ford F-150 extended cab FX4. 4WD problem

The malfunctioning part in my case is what ford calls the "integrated wheel end" which locs the weel hub on the four wheel drive in or out as need. Part is available from Ford and cost about $110.00. I will do this repair myself.

Your front hubs are automatic locking hubs, and the gears are hard nylon. These hubs break very easily, therefore causing you to lose your front wheel drive in 4 high, or 4 low. If you replace the hubs with "WARN (name brand) " manual locking hubs, you will never have the issue again. Of course, you will have to get out of the truck and manually lock the hubs, but they are metal gears, and much more durable. I've personally seen the issue several times, and changing the hubs has resolved the issue every time.

What id the proper way to engage 4 wheel drive in a 1999 dodge durango

If it has a floor mounted lever than it is shift on the fly for 4Hi, however most people prefer to go slower or be fully stopped to make sure it fully engages properly. To shift into 4-Lo, you have to be rolling at about 3MPH with the transmission in NEUTRAL. On the floor mounted shifter, firmly shift into Lo without pausing in neutral. Don't be afraid to be forceful, it's designed to be engaged firmly and quickly.

2005 Trailblazer XT won\'t go into 4WD. Front hubs don\'t engage with switch in cab. It will gear down to 4wd Lo but front wheels won\'t engage. Please help. Can\'t afford the dealer!

i've been told it was the 4wd actuator located on the passenger side near were the cv joint goes in to the front axle a good test is to floor jack it up so both wheels are off the ground and have someone on the other side , put in nutrual turn both wheels one way at same time and the 4wd drive shaft should turn if not its your actuator, costs about $86 for anew actuator and takes about 5 mins to change once you have the tire off

2004 f150, shift into 4 wheel, manual shift in floor, light comes on but dosent go into gear, any suggestions?

Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vac is removed the spring engages the IWE.

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
Shut of the truck ( still jacked up, and supported ) remove the vac lines from the IWE. The spring should push the gears in, without the vac line on.
Check the vent line ( tube that is routed into the engine compartment with nothing attached to it ), for blockages.
If the vent line is clear, and with the vac lines off the IWE should be engaged ( both front wheels locked ).
If they lock, the problem is with the IWE solenoid not shutting off vacuum to the IWEs. There is a TSB on the 2004-2006 IWE solenoids, a newer revision has been made, and used from 2007 and newer MYs.

Here is a block diagram of the IWE system

2000 Ford F-150 4x4 in gear with floor shift will not activate.

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc ). Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft. If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case. If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem. I would guess a problem with the vacuum disconnect motor on the front axle ( or vacuum lines from teh solenoids or the solenoids themselves ), but best to verify the test above to know which way to go. Post back a comment after the test.

Ford 4-wheel drive help

This is for 4x4 shifter on the floor.
In the front of the truck on the axle there's a plastic cover with 2 10mm bolts remove it and spray down the shifting actuator it operates on vacuum. You might have to pull it in four wheel and check to see if the vacuum pod is engaging the shift lever on the axle. Then again you might have to replace it very easy to do. But I would spray it down with some WD-40 it should work.
