This says it does have a fluid reservoir? Some electric power steering just has an electric pump as a opposed to a mechanical pump driven by the serpentine belt.
check fuses connections and test the electric power steering assist motor under dash left side attached to the column also check steering knuckle connector that connects the steering shaft to the steering rack
You most likely have one of two things going on here, the steering gear is defective or the power steering pump is defective (I assume the fluid is full). If the steering gear is the problem it may only be hard to turn in one direction, if the PS pump is the problem then it is always hard to turn no matter which way the car is turned. In the future please include the make, model, year and engine type of the vehicle so I can give you an answer that is directly related to your vehicle..
Sorry but your not going to get it fxed fast ! Your vehicle has Electric Power Steering (EPS) , an electronic control module makes it work . If this module is bad an need's replacing your going to have to take it to a GM dealer to have it replaced an programmed .
The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system reduces the amount of effort needed to steer the vehicle. The system uses the power steering control module (PSCM), torque sensor, power steering motor rotational sensor, power steering motor, discrete battery voltage supply circuit, and the GMLAN serial data circuit to perform the system functions. The PSCM and power steering motor are each serviced separately from the steering column assembly. However, the motor rotational sensor is serviced as part of the power steering motor, and the torque sensor is serviced as part of the steering column assembly. The PSCM also monitors vehicle speed from the engine control module (ECM) via the GMLAN serial data circuit. At low speeds more assist is provided for easy turning during parking maneuvers. At higher speeds less assist is provided for improved road feel and directional stability.
Could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored , need a professional scan tool to see these code's .
u have a electric steering instead of power steering with fluid so u got sensors and a electric motor so u need the dealer on this one, sorry theres just too much to this steering to know whats going on with out seeing it
i've had a similar issue with a 99 M3. really stiff steering. i thought i was getting old and weak.
I was chasing another problem when i discovered a solution for my stiff steering issue.
Most of these vehicles have a valve that helps control steering pump fluid flow at various speeds.
i.e at higher speed you want stiffer steering. at low speeds easier steering. however, how does the pump known your going faster?
Note: all bmw steering hoses leak...
As your car ages, so do electrical contacts, especially in harser climates.
I used eletrical contact cleaner and di-electric grease to solve an intermittemt ASC problem.
This also cleared up the steering issue.
get some electrical contact cleaner and some di-electric grease. pop your hood and clean as many electrical connections as you can and apply a little di-electric grease after the contact cleaner drys.
even do the dme.
Note: I have replaced the power steering rack twice before i discovered this fix. You may also fix some other issues in the meantime.
electrical contacts may be the biggest problem source for most newer vehocles since they tie everything together.
the reason you can't find the power steering pump is because the steering system is electric and won't have a pump or fluid, you need to go to the dealer for repairs
