Misfiring escape 2003

The CHECK ENGINE WHENT ON. I change the spark plug to an Escape 2003 and the spark cables.
The Maintenance book shows tha the the firing order is 1342. When i put it that way the misfire start and the engine just went off. Then i change the order to 1324 and the car start running better. But i still have the CHECK ENGINE icon On despite the fact that i change the spark and cables. Ford Escape 2003 4 cylinder manual transm.
