Engine light on tighten fuel cap

Engine light is on, diagnostics read tighten fuel cap. fuel cap is tight but the alert info reads the same.

  • muscovado Jun 12, 2009

To my surprise the engine light went off on its own. The tighten fuel cap alert still lights up (rarely), but hasn't triggered the engine light.

You can try testing the vacuum purge solenoid, remove both lines and plug them, rescan ecm at 2000 rpm. if you have an interactive scanner, try to purge the solenoid manualy and watch for pressure drop! do you have acess to a smoke machine? good luck, marty

If the cap is tight then it will have to be diagnosed further. If the cap was loose then tighten it and clear the codes. It will go off on it's own but it will take a while

2004 infiniti g35 check engine light just now came on..why

There are dozens of reasons why a "Check Engine" light could come on. Until you get the codes read, you can't begin to have a reason why. Go to your local auto parts place, most will read the codes for free.
Infinitis do have a trick, though. If the last time you filled the tank, the gas cap didn't get fully tightened, a day or so later, the Check Engine light comes on. Confirm the cap is tight, and if it wasn't, the light will go off tomorrow.

I have Daihatsu Charade 1994 5D Hatch. While drive the car engine goes "off" its self when I stop the car @ traffic lights or slow down the car to take a turn. Anyone help me to solve this problem. any...

This may sound like a really simple answer to your problem, but I'd suggest you check the gas cap. A lot of times when your Charade is moving around the gas load will shift in the tank causing pressure changes which register on the electronic sensors as an engine fault. If you tighten up the gas cap, you restore the fuel system's pressure balance and the light shouldn't go on again. Since the early 1990s, auto fuel systems have to be sealed so that the emissions controls work correctly. If the gas cap is not tightly turned down, the system reads it as a fault and the engine light or check engine light goes off. That should solve your problem. One last note, you don't really say whether there are any other problems occurring like bucking or misfiring. Does this occur at any time? If it does, let me know and I'll find the answer to that problem. If you want more information about cars you might look at www.safecar.info where you will find a wide range of information including car repair hints.

My check engine light came on, 'i had it read, the read said that the coils were bad, I filled the gas tank and the light went off, what's wrong?

Hard to say. The gas cap might have been loose. That will turn the Chk Eng light on. When you filled the gas tank you made the cap tight again.

Get the codes read again if the light comes on again.

2006 avalanche tighten gas cap

If the light is on, codes are stored. Get the codes read. You most likely have a leak in the EVAP system that's not caused by the gas cap.

Check engine light on need to tighten gas cap

Take your car to a place like Autozone or parts store that will do a Free hand held diagnostic check for you, read the code and print out what it means, I am not sure what you mean by tighten gas cap, some cars check engine lights will come on for gas cap pressure, maybe you need a new one? thanks and take care.

Ran out of gas recently. when refueled and started again, check engine symbol stayed on? well mainted and has always ran great since new.

Sometimes the check engine light will come on if the fuel cap is not on tight enough. Check the fuel cap for an intact seal and install at correct tightness.

A major auto parts store will read out the stored trouble code in the car's computer for free. If the code pertains to the fuel EVAP system, the code probably set because you ran out of gas. Copy down the code and then have it erased. The check engine light should go out. If it comes on again, have the code read and the problem checked out.

Check engine light came on Tuesday afternoon, after I filled the gas tank on Monday afternoon. If the check engine light came on because of the gas cap not being on tight enough, do I just tighten the gas...

Check engine light might have came on because of loose gas tank cap, but it's a good idea to read the code and check if it's not something else, you can take your car to an Auto Zone and they read the code for free and tell you the cause also. But if you want to reset the check engine light, only way is to disconnect the battery terminals and let it set overnight, check engine light will be reset. Hope it helps and let me know if you need more advice. Please don't forget to rate the answer it helps with my ratings, thanks!

I have 2005 f-250 super duty and the display reads "check fuel cap" I hit clear and now it reads "check engine"

the loose fuel cap can cause what the motor calls an emmisions leak, which will cause the check engine light to appear, if you have checked the cap and it is tight and the problem with the lights persist, there could be a vacume leak on the motor causing the same issue, some vehicals see the small vacume leak and just assume it is their fuel cap.

Fuel/gas cap

have you replaced the gas cap? most of the time when a check engine light is on for the gas cap, its because the cap isnt venting the fumes properly or the cap isnt on tight enough.
