2005 Lotus Elise Malfunctioning cluster gauge

Tach, spedo, and gas guage keep going out but the car continues to work fine. We have tried disconnecting the battery and resetting the ECU with no improvement.

Where is the speed sensor located?

  • darrell Sep 27, 2013

There is a white connector with 3 wires behind the cluster.

  • darrell Sep 27, 2013

Sorry! There is a white connector with 3 wires behind the cluster. One of the terminals has loosened up and you'll have to tighten up the wire terminal in the connector. Replacing the cluster will not fix your problem, because the problem is in the harness connector. Good Luck

Have the speed sensor replaced

Its not the speed sensor Randy. Lotus Elises do not have speed sensors. They get speed readings from the ABS Controller as an average of all 4 wheel speed sensors. So that if one goes out you still get a signal based upon the remaining inputs.

I had/have the same issue on my 2005 Elise. The white electrical connector behind the center of the cluster seems to be the issue. I pulled off the plastic binnacle and I can press the connector against the cluster so the gauges start working again. I removed the cluster, cleaned the connections, bent the pins ever so slightly to ensure a snug fit and re-seated it. Seemed to work for a few weeks then the intermittent issue started again. Frustrating. May be a connection issue in the cluster itself.

Instruments don't work, key stuck in ignition, doesn't shift correctly

Sounds like you need a new car.
With joking aside, the problem with your speedo, tach, gas guage, temp gauge and odometer can probably be one of two things. Check your fuses. If they are fine you may need to replace your cluster panel. I had to have the entire thing changed over my speedo not working right. It was not cheap. You might want to check the relay box under the hood. Does your transmission leak? Check the fuses and relay on it also. Get a new ignition switch and replace the old one if your key is stuck. You can try WD40 on that key but don't expect any miracles. The bearings are likely shot. Sorry I posted all of this bad news. Good luck.

2005 Lotus Elise instrument cluster shorts in and out.

The "white plastic piece" you are referring to is probably a connector that mates with the cube shaped piece you mentioned.. If you remove the instrument panel and take it to an electronics supply store (Not Radio Shack) they might be able to help. Or go to a dealer.

Gas gauge and tach do not read proper readings! What will cause this? The gas guage will peg past full when there is only quarter tank and tach reads 4500 RPM at idle

The gas tank sounds like a bad ground usually located under the car at the gas tank. I do not know but maybe they both tach and fuel gague get their ground from the same place.

Gauges not working

Ur instrument cluster is most probably the culprit. Smack the dashboard to see if it helps. If it does, bingo, most probably a bad weld on the cluster circuit board. Happens alot on VW's.
