I have a 2001 Saturn and a couple of days ago it started sputtering and hesitating ,sometimes when idling ,and sometimes when accelerating, but once you get going it smooths out also the idle runs high sometimes. These things all happen at random times.I checked the codes and it showed engine misfire. The plugs were done a week ago,and today I change both coil packs and the fuel filter. The car runs a little better but still sputters, usually at a lower rpm and it also has a rotten egg ,or sulfur smell.I was thinking maybe a cat or o2 censer, but those are expensive maybe's.Does anyone know what this problem could be?PLEASE HELP!
HELLO. WELL YOUR ALMOST RIGHT,. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO . IS CHANGE YOUR MAP. CENSER'S . AND THAT SHOULD DO THE TRICK . WELL HOPE THIS HELP'S YOU , GOOD LUCK

Try cleaning the Mass airflow sensor and replacing the air filter. You can buy the spray MAF sensor cleaner from any auto parts store for about $6.00, ask the parts guy how to use it.
pull spark plugs check if any are excessively white or have a mineral deposit. This would indicate a head gasket problem. Also check the oil stick & cap for milky substance, also indicates head gasket. Another thing to check is pull the ignition coil off clean up the rust to get a better ground. Basic tune up changing the plugs & wires, filters ect may solve the sputtering.
Most likely none are related to the computer. Surging idle is often a sign of a vacuum leak and can cause random misfires. Vacuum leak would also cause hesitation. Sensor heater can be a fuse, wiring or bad sensor. What's the window doing?
Solved my problem: After more internet searching and consulting with my mechanic we determined it was the intake manifold gasket folding over into the #1 cylinder. This is common on Saturn engines. The gasket folds over leaving a leak in the vacuum system which causes the car to run lean. Check for a leak by spraying carburator cleaner around the #1 cylinder intake and you will hear the idle change if there is a leak. I had gasket replaced for $450 and car runs like new. My car is a 2000 saturn SL 1 with 60000 miles on it. Hope this helps someone.
