Subzero Temps outside car clicks but wont start, batery discharge light came on
If you just hear a click, try this:
This procedure usually works:
·Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter. Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine.
·Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
·Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck bendix gear.
·Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.
The alternator lamp will not go out until the engine runs..
the alt converts engine horse power to electric power,
no engine, no alt.
so that means the engine will not start, or better it wont crank
subzero C or Subzero F.,, -10F or -10C, vastly different temps.
???????
no crank, then jumper cable crank it with donor car running.
crank now,?
yes , then battery is bad, weak or just discharged.
no, then starter bad, or key line bad.
hot wire starter solenoid. cranks now, is bad key line
if not, bad starter.
did you wiggle the shifter at crank.
did you wiggle key. extra.
did you try crankiing in neutral using fresh start contacts.>... yah.
SOURCE: 91 camry wont start fuse problem?..the car is great running cond.
Probably the battery. The battery may have enough voltage for the lights to work; however, this may not be enough voltage to start the car.
Find someone with cables to give you a jump start. Then take the car by an auto parts place and have them load test your battery. Most stores do this at no charge.

Your battery is probably nearing the end of its service life. Take it to a parts store like Autozone and have them check it with their tester.
