Question about Volvo 760

1 Answer

88 760 GLE V6 misses and stalls, condensation build up within the distributor cap which cannot be stopped, though there is no leak from behind the distributor itself as it was examined and all piping around the distributor has been replaced, yet the problem is still present. Coil, spark leads and distributor cap have also been replaced with known working genuine volvo parts. Could anyone suggest how to fix such a problem? as even the volvo specialists are surprised to the cause of this

gaping of the spark plugs is not the cause as these problems occur once the engine has run for atleast a period of time, before then it would run as usual

If there is condensation building up under the distributor cap, perhaps the cap is not vented properly.

SOURCE: I have a 88 volvo 740 GLE and it wont fire.

The problem wont be your timing belt. you need to take out a spark plug plug it into your HT lead and check for a strong spark or even if there is a spark. check your contact breakers on the distributor as well

SOURCE: No spark?

Hi, common thing with the mazda was the coil or the ignition amplifier going faulty, both of which are located within the distributor, the coil ususally gives the symptoms you describe, a weak spark. The coil is the most common failure aswell for your vehicle i would recommend a new one, also make sure distributor is spinning as it could just be a case of a broken timing belt.

Good luck Davelee

Loosen the cap, flip it, wipe it dry with rag or paper towel. Moisture does not normally build under the cap. What conditions exist that's causing it, steam, different temperatures.?? Water spray?

This could be air or fuel, if you are getting a mass air flow code then make sure there are no vacuum leaks around the intake also if the distributor is in wrong depending on how far off it is it could run but will run bad and will stall out, did you mark the distributor housing and also where the rotor was pointing as it is very important that the distributor rotor is point in the same spot as it was coming out if not then you will need to set the engine at top dead center and then locate the #1 cap location and install the dist rotor to be pointing to that wire,,top dead center is with #1 cylinder at the top of the compression stroke, make sure before you do that that there are no leaks try to keep it running by holding the gas pedal while someone look for a vacuum leak, you will hear a hissing sound for a vacuum leak, good day.

drsinister69 Is an idiot if u dont know nothing about camaros dont post. The opti spark is behind the water pump but they are sealed that way they do not get moisture in it at all. but if the plug in is not all the way in it could get water inside. to change this out all u have to do. Is take off the fans, take off the balancer pulley, take off water pump, then use a 10mm socket and take off the distributor but make sure it is up on number 1 to get it in time or it wont start

Hit big puddle, drove home now won't start.

Either there is condensation in your distributor cap or you have got water in the plug holes. Remove the plug leads and using a cloth clear the lose water, a hair dryer will evaporate the rest. If it is in the distributo cap, take it off by removing the screws or clips and dry it out, as well as the inside of the distributor. Spray it with silicone oil to keep it water proof.

Hi, no there are not any holes in the cap. There is a gasket that runs around the distributor to keep out the moisture. Change it out, this must be dry and you know that. It has to be the gasket as if the cap was cracked it would run very poorly. Check and replace the gasket.

Distributor cap gasket missing technician said causeing mosture and that is why my car is stalling

If your car is equipped with a distributor, then yes, if that gasket is missing, then it would allow moisture to enter and cause your vehicle to stall, or run rather poorly. I would suggest changing your distributor cap and wires and this would correct the problem.

Just be sure to change one wire at a time from the old cap to the new cap, to the spark plug, You don't want to mix up where the wires belong this will cause you a headache you don't want.

Why your distributor could be blamed is because of the moisture causing rust, and rust won't allow electrical current flow, which a Spark ignited engine, relies on to ignite the fuel mixture in the cylinders.

Hope this helps.
