I'm not positive but I think the cluster is faulty and needs to be replaced. That is assuming the rest of the cluster works such as the speedometer and tach?

Good luck.

First place to look is behind the dash. Its unlikely to be the 'sensor', as its a cable driven speedo...this would suggest the dashboard panel is falling to bits...you may be able to pick up a scrap on from somewhere...

SOURCE: Dash lights on and clock resets. 2003 Jetta

To fix the clock and the odometer I just had to make sure there was a fuse in both places 11 and 15. I have a standard trans and one place I thought was for auto trans instrument panel lights. But both must be there. The engine check light also went off but the airbag light is still on. I was wanting to avoid going to the dealer, but I might have to so they can reset that.

SOURCE: 1997 Jetta GLX speedometer and odometer

If your cluster gauges work ok but your speedo does not work once and awhile, its time to replace your cluster panel, this is a common problem in the MK3's I had to change mine twice in the MK3 vdubs I own. Its fairly easy to replace, I just picked up a used one at a scrap yard. The cluster panel is all once peace you can not swap out gauages, you can try but you will do more damage then its worth. Good luck

The line connected to your transmission could be damaged or disconnected... it is how your odometer reads your distance/MPH, etc...

My odometer keeps reseting

Normally this is an odometer fuse problem, it is the same as for the lighter ( I think is the number 21) check it for loose connection or corrosion also check your battery connection for any loose or dirt, corrosion signs. This should help. If not than the odometer itself is faulty you can check this as well by connecting a diagnostics computer to the car and check it with VAG software.

I have a 1995 mercury cougar and my odometer stoped wporing so i got two off wrecked cars and it still will not work can it be the wires to the odometer

If your 95 XR7 odometer stopped working the most common problem is the plastic gears. They get so hot the surface shows bubbles that weaken the gears and eventually cause the gear or gears to break and the odometer stops working. The odometer part of the speedodometer has a small electric motor which drives a 16 tooth cam gear also called carrier gear (POD) which then drives a 20 tooth internediate gear which drives the odometer and trip odometer. These 2 gears need to be replaced. I also have a 95 XR7 and had the same problem and I got the replacement gears and did it myself. If you go to www.odometergears.com they have picture instructions and you can also order your replacement gears.

The clock and odometer reset every time I start the car, clock to 12:00 and the odometer to 0.0

Have Battery load tested. Probably have a bad cell and it is not providing you enough cranking amps to start car and maintain enough current to electronics.

2002 Volks. Jetta - digital display for odometer, clock, gears

Mine went blank after condensation inside windshield dripped behind the dash (sunroof drain problem). After a few months, in really dry winter weather, digital display time, gears, odometer came back. I assume water inside dash just needed time to evaporate. Sure beats $1000 to replace unit inside dash!
