Hey Earl, what's going on ? The air bag module is usually under the passenger seat or the center console ! The only way to turn off the light is with a up grade scan tool , not code reader. An the light is on for a reason , problem with the system ! If you don't know about this don't mess with it , you could deploy an air bag !
The AIR BAG indicator, located on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) is used to notify the driver of SIR system malfunctions and to verify that the SDM is communicating with the IPC. When the ignition is turned ON, the SDM is supplied with ignition 1 voltage and requests the IPC to flash the AIR BAG indicator 7 times. While flashing the indicator, the SDM conducts test on all SIR system components and circuits. If no malfunctions are detected the SDM will communicate with the IPC through the class 2 serial data circuit and request the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator OFF. The SDM provides continuous monitoring of the air bag circuits by conducting a sequence of checks. If a malfunction is detected the SDM will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and request the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator ON. The presence of a SIR system malfunction could result in non-deployment of the air bags. The AIR BAG indicator will remain ON until the malfunction has been repaired.
Generally speaking, disconnect the car's battery before proceeding. After you have replaced the air bag, you will likely have to replace the air bag controller located elsewhere in the vehcile as most of them are one-time use only and cannot be used though a blown airbag has been replaced. Your local salvage yard may have an unused air bag controller for your vehicle.
If your airbag code is blinking, and you get 51, it means that your internal thermal fuse in your airbag computer is blown which is caused by an intermittant short to ground on one of the wires in the circuit. When the short to the ground is removed, code 51 flashes with the use of the airbag warning lamp, 5 flashes, pause, 1 flash, longer pause. According to the Ford, this is a nonrepairable fix, you must buy a new air bag module which is a blue box located in the vicinity of the the steering column.
The Air Bag Warning light on your dashboard functions just link a check engine light does. When it comes on and stays on there is a issue and the only way to know is to get it Airbag Control Module scanned by a VAG com scanner.
I don't know if Auto Zone can scan this but it is worth a try as they are free. If they don't then you will have to go to a repair shop and have it scanned. Once you get it scanned you will know what is causing the Air Bag Warning light to stay on. Then you can post it hear and I can assist you further. There is really know way to know until it is scanned.
On air bag problems you'll be very hard pressed to find anybody to service anything on the system. Having worked at a nationwide autocare company, we refused to service them. As far as i know you'll have to take it to the dealer.
The airbag light will "light" when there is a malfunction in the
airbag system. The fault is present in the air bag controller. The computer must
be scanned to retrieve these stored faults to pinpoint the malfunctioning component.
Your airbag system is not functioning. I strongly suggest taking it in to get tested!
Hello , check the airbag contact sensor behing the grill assembley . They are located to the left and right of the grill almost to the headlight assemblies. Check the wires to them for corrosion and damage. Check the fuse as well. There should be an air bag testing wire or fuse in the fuse panel. DO NOT UNPLUG THE AIR BAG SENSORS OR HIT THEM !!
You have a bad Passenger Air Bag Deactivation Indicator. The bulb that shows when the passenger air bag is off.
Have seen alot of these go bad especially in police cars. The part number you need is 5W1Z-10A936-A.
