If its manual sounds like your clutch could be slipping does car smell of burt clutch?
check cluth adjustment
may need new clutch
do stall test with hand brake on, foot (heel-toe) on brake and accel pedal to about 2000rpm then let out clutch and car should stall if engine revs go down and engine still runs but you can rev causing slip and you will now smell what slipping burnt clutch is replace it.

if its auto check trans oil level and what does it look like red-good
darker red to black-bad often smells burnt also possibly new trans required.

Shifter hard to move thru gears cables are good and free when disconnected hear squeak when shifting

first i would contact ford dealershift to see if any recalls with this problem...The transmission on the 2002 Ford Focus has been having problems shifting gears,The linkage inside the transmission suffers from premature wear, causing difficulty in switching or shifting gears. The transmission bands that wrap around each gear to hold the gears in place are becoming loose, causing the gears to shift harshly. Both problems have been the biggest culprit when the Ford Focus transmission experiences problems shifting gears. The only correction for this shifting problems is to have the transmission replaced or rebuilt.

What does the shift solenoid look like and where does it connect, how is it to fix myself

The solenoid is inside the transmission. On this kind of issue, I recommend changing the transmission fluid and maybe adding some conditioner to the fluid. If that doesn't work, a transmission specialist will have to open the transmission to repair.

When i insert card car will not start untill i put my foot on brake pedal . i have a automatic transmisson.when car starts i cannot get car into gear

Foot on brake starting/shifting -Some vehicles have this as a safety measure. This is normal. If you are having issues shifting gears, you may have linkage issues, but more simply, try turning the steering wheel a little each way, it this allow you to change gears , then something is binding up.

I'm having trouble when I put the car in drive it's going through it's gear progression slow and it's idiling high I'm thinking it may be the transmission fillter since I had the transmission replaced...

Check this first. On the transmission there should be a small vacuum line that goes all the way to the inlet plenum, check that both ends of this line are are connected securely and that the line has no holes in it. This vacuum line governs the rate at which the transmission moves from one gear to the next. When the engine is running slowly, just above idle, the throttle plate is all but closed and the car will shift through the gears pretty quickly as there is no load and plenty of vacuum. If on the other hand when the engine is racing under load, with the throttle plate fully open, there is little vacuum and the transmission holds in gear for very much longer before up shifting. If this vacuum line is disconnected or leaking the transmission will interpret this as the engine under load and will be very tardy in up shifting.
