Jeff provides a great answer to the issue

  • Jeff Armer Jan 02, 2023. Starter relay contacts stuck closed could be a reason .

  • Circuit Description
Moving the ignition switch to the START position sends a 12 volt signal to the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) Crank Request circuit. The ECM/PCM verifies that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. With the transmission in Park, voltage flows through the Park/Neutral position switch and feeds the starter relay coil. The ECM/PCM then grounds the control circuit of the starter relay. When the starter relay is energized it allows battery positive voltage to the starter solenoid S terminal. On some vehicles the starter will continue to crank the engine with the key released until it starts or the crank command has timed out to prevent excessive heat build up in the starter circuitry or the ECM/PCM receives an engine run flag.

Why does it start, then starter disengages?

about the starter it sounds like the starter bendix is worn so I belive you should change the starter and it should work like it should, and since you changed the computer, you needs to do a relearn set-up

Turn key. starter engages flywheel engine start to turn over. Then starter disengages form flywheel but continues to spin without care actually starting.

There maybe a problem with starter motor? Some of the national brand auto stores will test starter for you. Of course, you have to take it off and take it to them.

You could take the starter off, lay it on the ground, Hook up jumper cables properly from starter to battery. The starter should kick-out the drive gear and spin. If starter drive gear kicks out and in, something is wrong. Anymore I replace starter solenoid and starter motor as an assembly.

It wouldn't hurt anything to check flywheel teeth while your at it.

On the 5th. starter?

Get a shim kit for the starter. Disconnect the ignition so it won't start while cranking in the start mode. Start with the thinnest shim between the starter and block. Crank and listen to the starter operation. Add more shims until the starter drive gear engages and disengages without making any wierd binding or grinding noises while cranking the engine.
