About once every few months while driving the car shuts off, the steering wheel locks up and the battery light comes on. However, today, this happened 4 times! I have to glide to the side of the road, throw it in park, and then restart the car. The car starts up just fine and has no other problems, as I said, usually for a few months. However, today this happened four times within the course of 2 or 3 hours. Help, please!
I am assuming you mean you loose power steering when the steering wheel locks up, which would be a normal event if the engine dies. Same goes for the battery light since the alternator would stop charging the battery.
Someone will need to figure out if you are loosing fuel or spark when the engine dies, then troubleshoot the problem. It may be difficult to find if the mechanic can not duplicate the problem in the shop.

The problem is the serpentine (Drive Belt) belt.Theeem belt is broken or slipping. An early detections is the power steeirng may seem tough turn at times. If you notice slight steering probles. Check the driving belt! Also, check the idler pulley for wear, if the idler pulley bad replace the pulley before putting the belt on!

as long as security theft system is on, car wont start.
don't you have the remote key to disable the theft system?
you can bypass security but you have to have wiring experience and splicing before you can proceed.

SOURCE: I HAVE A KNOCKING NOISE
Hi DAVIDHAMMER,
My name is Dennis
and I'm sorry to tell you this but you should check your constant velocity universal joint in the front wheel for wear or failure. If this knocking gets severe that is more noticeable when you turn your front wheels to the far end of travel you may have an expensive problem and this is normally fixed at the dealership.
please rate the solution because i will learn from your rating. Thank you
SOURCE: 1999 Cadillac Catera - 103,000 miles - cranks but no fire
Hello carol...from the symptons you describe more than likely it's the CPS (crankshaft position sensor.)
The CPS is a common problem on Cateras with these symptoms.
The sensor is a magnetic impulse type that sends a signal to the computer, the computer then triggers the fire signal. When the CPS gets weak, dirty or has low voltage the intermitten no starts occur. It will finally result in a no start at all...Please be aware that a lot of caddy dealers will and have overcharged customers for this common problem by ill advise and replaceing uneeded componets.
Good luck...i hope this helps and will fixya up.

My car is actually a 2004 Buick LeSabre, I don't know why it posted in the Cadillac portion of the site. I'm pretty sure I typed in "Buick". Oops, sorry!
