Question about Volvo 760

1 Answer

Charging system I have a 1990 760, the alternator stopped charging so I got rebuilt from Kragen put it in and it charged for a total of 5 seconds then nothing, I excanged it installed it and absolutely nothing, checked it with a meter and no output at all, exchanged it installed it and again nothing, no output. My question am I just unlucky or could there be something in the system that is blowing the alternator immediately upon installation, Oh I did replace the regulator with a new one on the second try. any help would be great before I exchange a third time. Thanks, Bill

Hi William
to start with, check if there is output voltage from the alternator it self ( at the back of the alternator ) using a voltmetre
Chould give 14.0 Volt, if is OK, that means you have a broken wire between the alternator and the battery, this is common.
good luck

Testimonial: "Hi, I guess I didn't specify where I checked with the meter but I did check on the back of all of the alternators and they all read zero, I checked on the big post should the smaller post just below have voltage also?, Thanks Again, Bill"

Yes, your alternator should be charging at a minimum of 1200 R.P.M. sometimes alternators don't work like they should, once I bought a brand new one and it didn't work like it was supposed to. I would try one more time. Let me know how it works. It sounds like the diode trio which turns AC into DC current is not working properly.

I recently had my starter rebuilt, my alternator checked, new battery put in. All working good but, my battery wont hold a charge. Something is draining my battery. After a hour or so after running it will...

Two possibilities.

First, if the belt running to the alternator isn't tight enough it will slip and won't charge properly. You can check the specs for your specific car but generally when you press halfway on the belt span you shouldn't be able to push in more than about 3/8"

The second guess would be that the alternator is, in fact, faulty in spite of being checked. If the battery is dead after an hour of the car running the alternator isn't putting out anything at all to charge the battery.

I'd try having the electrical system tested at another place. Autozone and Advance Auto will put on a tester for free. The dealer of the car will help too but will be the most expensive.

Good luck.

Battery Light is on - 2004 jetta

when the battery light is on it means the engines alternator is not charging the battery, this is either the alternator malfunctioning or a wiring problem, Kragen or Autozone can run the charging system test on the alternator and it is free.

Battery light comes on and off car dies with a quick boost it run again then dies battery good

this is caused by a failing alternator. Kragen auto and Autozone tests these for free.

The alternator is loading up too much for some reason.
Had the same issue on my friend's 2001 Mazda Protege. Turned out the voltage regulator in the alternator was faulty. Had the alternator rebuilt. A week later, it acted up again! There is apparently another issue, but I have not been able to figure it out.
Unfortunately, I don't have a clear answer for you, but, one's thing's for sure. Mazda has to stop using crappy Ford electrics in their cars.

I have a dodge caravan 2002 it wont charge put on new alternator, and computer. it still wont charge. the wire on the back of the alternator is not showing any fire?

Why do you feel it isn't charging. Are you going off of a voltage ereadiing? I ask because if it is reading 12 v at the battery , Do not run it very long. The lower the voltage the higher the amps. An Alternator will ocweheat and self destruct if it is working at its high limit for 15 minutes or so. A heavy charge iis normal for 30 seconds or so to make up for the starting drain. But, should show a gradual rise within seconds. An alternator is for battery charge maintenance only and should never be used to charge a dead battery. A dead battery can an will over tax the alternator for too long. A defective battery will do the same thing and it is usually why you have to change the alternator in the first place. So, If your battery is dead or extremely lpw, it should be charged with a charger Do not put a new or rebuilt Aly. sgainst a possible bad battery. It costs nothing to have your batt load tested by a auto parts store. Good Luck=Ned-.

Check charging system light comes. Just had the alternator rebuilt but light still comes on.

There are alot of cars that have a alternator fuse I would check for that first if thats checks out the next thing to check is the wires going to the alternator as there could be a loose or bad wire that is in need of replacement.

My alternator went bad and so i had it replaced. then the battery light came on again. I replaced the battery brand new and the light is still flickering. Whats the problem now?

the battery light has nothing to do with the battery, it indicates that the charging system (which is the alternator) is not producing enough power to cancel the light in the dash, have Autozone or Kragen test the charging system again, the rebuilt alternator may be defective that u just installed or a connector to it has a bad connection.

94 Ford Taurus Battery light pops on intermittenly usually when turning corners

You have an Alternator or alternator connector issue, have Auto Zone or Kragen test the charging system, it is free, most likely the alt will need to be replaced.
