Question about 1987 Toyota Camry

Intermittent non-starting caused by high pitched whirring when key turned in ignition

'87 Camry. Some times, turning key in ignition to start the car causes a high pitched whirring sound. This can go on for several starting attempts, but does not always happen. Car ultimately starts after repeatedly trying to start and getting the whirring noise. What causes this?

Hello gwolfson...from your explanation it sounds like the starter motor is turning but the bendix is not engaged. This happens over time and is caused by normal wear. A click or clicking noise would point to the starter solenoid. Don't wait until you hear a grinding noise to replace it, thats hard on the ring gear and flywheel. A NEW starter is recommended if you plan on keeping the car. If not, you can go with a rebuilt starter for around 65 dollars. Of course make sure the battery terminals are clean and secure as well as the solenoid terminals.

Hello;
The problem you are experiencing is one of two possiblilties. First, the bendix is weak in the starter. Best course of action is to replace the starter. When you pull the starter out, use a pry bar or screwdriver to rotate the flywheel an inspect the meshing teeth of the flywheel. If there is a section that has worn teeth then the flywheel needs to be replaced.

Sounds like the solenoid is bad on the starter..Starter probably needs replacing.

Usually with heat issues, electrical components are affected. It may be fuel pump relay, found in the relay box under the hood. CHeck also if you have spark when this happens during start. If there is no spark your ignition system may be faulty. Inspect first the hi tension wire for loose connections. A bad distributor means no or intermittent signal will be detected by the computer from it and in turn it will not activate the fuel pump. It could be either one of the said issues or both may be the cause.

Starter turns but no ignition, PK3 M security

I have an 03 montana intermittant no start, security light flashes at the time of no start. Under the steering colom is a plug that comes fron the ignition with 4 wires pink , orng , blk, ppl. follow the wires and there is a plug. Try unpluging it then plug back in and try to start vehicle. If it starts then what i have done with it was wire in a relay that cuts power on ignition off and will power the module up on ignition.

blk to # 85 on relay, cut orng and attach one to # 30, the other to # 87, then attach pink to # 86. I have this working for 3 months so far no more intermittant start.

When starting in the morning, you have to turn the key and let it sit for about 10 or 15 seconds before you start it or else it will start and then soon die. What would be causing this? 1990 Volvo 240 DL

This sounds like a problem with the fuel pump. Check your fuel pump relay then listen for a whirring noise when you turn the ignition to the on position; without starting it. You have two fuel pumps; the main and the pre-pump. The pre-pump, which is in the gas tank itself, can be checked by taking the gas cap off the gas tank (with the ignition key on) and listening for a faint whirring noise. If the "whirring" noise is delayed you need to troubleshoot these pumps and see which one is failing.

My toyota camry 1995 key switch won't turn. i am able to use the key to open the doors and the trunk but when trying to start the ignition it will turn 1/4 and won't start.

I have had this problem. There could be a few reasons. ONE. The key itself is worn out...might be time for a replacement. Its amazing how fast that actually happens... TWO my brother who also has the same 95 camry as i do [in another color] had too much weight on his key chain [with all his other keys and twrinkets] for so long that it caused the ignition switch inside to pull down and not line up correctly inside. Which caused the key to only turn partway in the ignition and stop before the car could actually turn on. [He had to replace that part] I hope this has helped.

The whirring sound is more than likely your fuel pump. Give it a few seconds to build up pressure before cranking or have the pump replaced.

High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....
