I have a hard time starting the Turbo Diesel 2.8 Pajero NJ, when its cold, and is starting to become a problem when warm now as well. It winds over easily but dosnt want to fire. When it does it sounds like the bottom is going to fall out. Very lumpy banging sounds. when this started the other day the first time I thought it was only a solenoid problem as it sounded like it was just free spinning not turning over the motor. since then it has been hard to start with this lumpy sound and heaps of dark smoke. It has done 350,000 but still looks new (on the outside), puts out a fair bit of dark smoke under load though, plan to change the injectors when I can. Please help with any hints????? My Pajero starts perfectly at any time but once it heats up it wont start at all till it cools down. Once started it wont go over 3,500 rpm so its really slugish to drive, like somethings holding it back. I've done the injector pump, nozzles, new rings bearings etc. its a 4M40 engine. Any help???????
Warm up the engine and turn it off then try to turn the crankshaft pulley with a suitable wrench. if its too hard to turn by hand then the bearings might be too tight.
The problem maybe fuel drainback caused by injection pump front seal drawing in air this is a common fault but i had also a pump internal fault all was fixed by diesel specielist for 250 pounds by watson diesels elm grove wimbldon
