Question about 1996 Toyota Camry
After disconnecting the battery, I replaced a faulty headlight/indicator switch. Put it back together and of course the air bag as well. All connections together.
Lights are good now but the air bag light comes on when the ignition is turned on. I took it to a garage who said they would turn it off for $25., (not a Toyota garage.), and they could not get it to turn off using the connection under the console and wanted more time and money to fix it.
Any idea guys?
The collector ring under the steering wheel is not making connection. Did you lose a brush when you put the steering wheel back on. Try cleaning the collector ring with steel wool.

Yes, it could be neutral inhibitor switch on trans, or also check that the wiring at starter motor, check all connections are tight and clean.

If you are replacing the air bags, you should replace the front left and right crash sensors, the spiral cable under the steering wheel, AND the center air bag sensor, which is in front of the console. If your car has seat-belt pretensioners and force limiters, you may have to replace them also. You will know this if the seat belts are "locked up". If you do not replace all of the parts, you may get a air-bag code, and the air bags may not deploy next time.

Have you checked out the switch itself? Seems like the problem might be there.
If the lamp bulbs are sill intact, that's probably the most likely solution. There's a possibility you have a short somewhere in the switch relay that will allow the highlights to turn on but not the low beams.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and
WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air
restraint system (SF3) vehicle and when handling an air bag
module. This will reduce
the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the airbag module.
Doing so can result in
air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use
any memory saver
NOTE: Ifa seat equipped with a seat mounted side airbag and
or a safety belt
pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the
supplemental restraint system
(SES) must be depowered.
NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse
is removed and the
ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not
indicate a supplemental
restraint system (SRS) fault.
NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults
before releasing the vehicle
to the customer
1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
3. At the central junction box (Cm), located below the LH
side of the instrument panel,
remove the cover and the restraints control module (RCM)
fuse F223 (lOA) from
the CTh. For additional information, refer to the Wiring
4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag
indicator for at least 30
seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously
(no flashing) if the correct
ROsI fuse has been removed, If the air bag indicator does
not remain lit
continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding
5. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
6. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible
personal injury, the
backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or
replacing any front or
side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components
and before set-ricing,
replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front
or side air bag sensors,
such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches,
strikers, seats and hood
To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the
battery ground cable
and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect
auxiliary batteries and power
supplies (if equipped).

will sound in a pattern of 5
sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator and
any SRS fault discovered
must be diagnosed and repaired.
