1993 volvo 940 wagon. My brake pedal is feeling softer than usual. It takes quite a bit of time to stop the car. The master cylinder was replaced, all wheels bled and it is still feeling like I need to pull the hand brake to get the car to stop the way it should...LOL. The shop that replaced the master cylinder told me I needed to replace the ABS pump but could not offer any good reason why. I've never had any abs warning lights come on an all the sensors are fine. I hope someone has seen this problem before.
Thanks
Ken

I am assuming this is a manual transmission. First check the fluid level in the brake reservoir as this feeds the clutch as well. Check under the vehicle for leaks as air in the system can cause gear change issues. Does the pedal feel different? If it feels 'Spongy' you could get a Good Mechanic to bleed the system to get any air out.
Do you know if the clutch has been changed in the past? What mileage has the vehicle done? A Clutch assembly is usually only designed to last somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. How the vehicle is driven can also have a big effect on the life of the clutch.
Usually if the booster fails, the pedal is very hard to push enough to make the vehicle stop. If the pedal sinks or is soft, the master cylinder is allowing fluid to bypass the pistons inside.
Check brake fluid first. What year model make is vehicle? If an older vehicle with rear drum brakes go to an empty parking lot and place in reverse accelerate to about 30 mph and slam on brakes 3 times then try at idle and while in forward gear. Good Luck!!!
Because of the ABS system if you press the brake pedal with too much pressure then it will give you the illusion of a soft pedal. Does it feel like a soft pedal when the vehical is in motion and you then press on the brake pedal (normal)? The other thing is if your pads and/or caliper were frozen, when you changed them out. The brakes are not going to feel or brake exactly the same, after the repair. But you are there, if the pedal is real low or goes to the floor then there is still air in the system or for some reason, your master cylinder is defective.
