1987 jeep shuts down when switching gears or off gas pedal

Shuts off when shifting or off gas. Starts right up and goes until you shift or slow down to turn a corner, stalls again. Runs at idle wonderfully and while on the gas. What's up here?

stalls , moving, only. at stop lights or between gears.

SOURCE: 94 Jeep Wrangler intermittently stalls when put in reverse, drive

Take the air inlet hose off where it enters the throttle body and take a look at the throttle plates. It is likely that they’re dirty and have a build-up of carbon deposits. That is the most common cause for stalling that we see in the shop for your vehicle. Sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning to cure the stalling problem. There is an idle speed setting on your Jeep, but to check and/or perform this service step requires the use of a computer scan tool for your vehicle. If the cleaning doesn’t help ask a repair facility to check and reset, if needed, the minimum idle speed on your Jeep.

Thnx.

SOURCE: My 1991 Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder 5 speed manual

There could be a number of culprits. My first suggestion is to replace your fuel filter. It may be so clogged that idle speed doesn't draw enough petro to keep cylinders happy. Your fuel pump might be on the blink too. Lastly, you might want to inspect your Throttle Body Injector (TBI). It, too, could be clogged and starving the engine of fuel. Somehow, you've got a fuel starvation issue at idle speeds. Good luck.

SOURCE: i have a 1996 jeep

sounds like a faulty transmission bud.

Could be low fluid, burnt fluid, or worn one-way clutch or brakebands.

Best to let an autobox specialist try it out and give you a full opinion.

1988 Chevrolet Beretta. It suddenly lost power about 60 mph. No gas pedal at all decreased speed and about 20 mph it ran fine, runs good at dead stop.

I really need to know what size engine you have in your Beretta as well as how many gears are on the shifter as in low one low two Drive with a circle around it or one two three drive with a circle around it sounds to me like a torque converter pressure switch when vehicle is shifting into overdrive switch is not operating correctly releasing pressure from torque converter causing vehicle not to have enough counterweight for transmission until vehicle slows down and then will operate again shifting through gears until the Overdrive goes to kick in send more info

1987 jeep wrangler, BA 10/15 transmission stuck in first gear. What is likely cause in transmission?

a stick shift.
ok ill do stick shift 101..... (repaired many a box i have)
first off it can be 3 things, the stick bad. the box and the clutch.
so can you shift all gears , engine off, and parked.?
Q1: yes/no.?
if yes, can you shift to 2nd gear, parked & engine off
and then start engine and move in second gear using the clutch pedal.?
ill stop here, as most get lost , if i post the full diagnosis..... end.
we can go way beyond this. easy.

2004 jeep liberty won't move when put in gear (like brakes are locked).crank it in neutral put in gear it will go till i touch brakes then won't move again.WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS THING.

gear, is this a Manual trans? or AUTO you said gear.
what gear, please name the gear, 1,2,3,4,5 R
or PRNDL ( a/t box auto matic) what shift lever selection?
what is out door air temp, you do know brakes can get wet and freeze right?
it wont go you meant? until brakes are touched, key word won't?

ok engine only starts in PRNDL set to N??
is that it?
and then when you shift to D, the car will not move
what about the other gears.? try them all yet?

my guess (wild) is that you dont know how park lock out works.?
that you must hold the brake pedal down to shift to park or neutral.
is that it? (read operators guide?)

my guess is car is not drive-able. key point1 (a dead car)
point 2, engine starts and runs. and races on demand with gas foot.
point 3, im lost. (no trans stated or clear symptoms.)

my jeep has 6speed manual box
and the clutch allows me to start car.
on Automatics trans must be in park or neutral to crank engine.

"it will go till i touch brakes"

I read that 10 times,
my 2nd guess. the engine stalls ?

IS THAT IT, stalls means engine RPM is 0
and right foot actions are dead.
and all dash lamps glow, telling you STALL is now.

I have a 1991 lexus ls 400 and it was running fine then out of nowhere my car would jus shut off. then it would start right back up and run fine. its been doin this for a couple of weeks but not...

First thing is to check your transmission fluid when it is at normal operating temperature. The shutting off problem could be a lot of things.have your vehicle checked for codes, pep boys advanced auto and some others will do this for free.

Whenever I put the Audi A4 in reverse it shifts fine but when i put in in drive it shifts real hard and when I am slowing down at times it downshifts like something hit me.Where do I add trans fluid?

down the dipstick tube!!!(really)DO NOT OVERFILL...
Your audi is fitted with a fuzzy logic gearbox, it will change according to your driving style.TRY THIS,put into 1st and without touching gas pedal, let the car accelerate to top gear, stop Then using onle 1/3rd gas pedal do it again.then using 2/3rds do it again.then only using the minimum pedal req accelerate to max legal limit.(try not to use brake pedal, let the car slow down itself, until you have to)then drive as normal, it will feel like a different car.

93 buick century automatic drive with overdrive can manually shift up through gears to get up to speed but when slowing down if you press on the accelerater car begins to **** until you let off the gas...

It's not coming out of overdrive when you touch the brake pedal because the brake light switch/OD shutdown is either out of adjustment or just plain bad. It's staying in overdrive at low speed and causing the shuddering. Replace or adjust the brake light switch under dash at the brake pedal.

My 1989 Jeep with AW4 transmission does not downshift or ?

This model has a tranny computor under the dash on the right side screwed to the bottom of the dash. If I remember correctly, there is also an inline fuse attached to the harness. Check the fuse.

2000 Volvo S40

one unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission
it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies
run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well
