For about the last month every time I put gas in the car,I have a hard time starting it.I have to turn it over several times to get it started, but eventually it will start. I ONLY have this problem when refueling.Any other time, the car starts right away. Yesterday I got gas after letting the fuel get very low (fuel light was on) and now the car won't start at all. It did start a couple of times but then died immediately. I have read it may be the EVAP Purge valve or the fuel pump. Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wnet out of gas on my VW Beetle 2001 last saturday. When I added gas to the tank, the car wouldn't start and the EPC light went on and I haven't been able to get it to start ever since. Would the EPC light have anything to do with the gas pump or anything related to running out of gas?
I bet it's the gas. After some time the gas will no longer be volatile enough to start the car. Try draining all the fuel and putting in some fresh gas. Remember, when you try to start it again you'll need to get the new gas through the pump and lines before it will start. Also, check the condition of the injectors. Old gas can start to break down and build up a film that could be on your injectors (or clog your fuel filter- better check that too). Hope this helps.
All the time? Only hot? Only when first starts? Only when wet? Did it start after after buying cheap gas or adding gas from an old gas can? How long since last tune up?
I would suspect bad ign wire leaking high voltage or it is not getting to the spark plug OR a fouled plug. Sometimes you can hear the spark SNAPPING to ground or see it at night. Often you can get bad wires to show up by spraying them with a mist of water from an old spray bottle and uptting the car in gear with light acelleration. Make SURE to NOT stand in front of the car while somone is jazzing the gas!!!
Been a while since I have worked on a VW but most often it is plugs and wires.
Hope this helped, Ken C
Broken vaccume lines could also give you a skip and poor power in some situations.
The trannys on the vw's are weird, they actually have a brain which tells the tranny what to do, when to switch gears under the driving conditions etc. Is thair a check engine light on? when is the last time you had a tranny service done on it? Also, it sounds even weirder, but is your alternator ok, is it putting out the proper volts to the battery? the alternator not charging the system can lead to alot of weird acting issues.
Well if your alternator light is on. seems like you need a new alternator. if it has crapped out it would be the reason why youre car doesnt start. its not a terribly hard fix. but i would say that is probably the reason why it wont start.
