Battery drains after stereo install

I installed a Kenwood KDC-BT310U in my blazer using Metra 70-1858 harness adapter. I soldered all connections. I followed the diagrams(not difficult, after all I have installed many stereos over the years). The radio played great and every feature worked perfectly. After a few days, my battery was dead. After recharging, I had the battery and alternator checked and both passed. I checked amp draw and got .43 amps. I then removed the stereo and got .18 amps. I also bought an identical radio for my Caravan and performed the amp draw test in it and got .01 amps. I installed that one in my Blazer and got exactly the same results as with the other radio, .43 amps. I verified all wires on the adapter against the factory harness in the Blazer and all was correct. The only wire in the Blazer that wasn't used was the VSS wire. Could there be an issue with that? Please help, my daughter drives this and I don't want her to get stranded somewhere. Thanks in advance, Cliff

Thanks for your help, but I found the problem. When I removed the trim initially to install the radio (that piece of trim is a bear to remove), I didn't realize I bumped the vanity mirror (DOH!). I didn't know that the cover was broken and had been for years. The switch activated and the light stayed on continuously, draining the battery. I fixed that and the amp draw dropped to .01 A(10 mA). May I offer some words of wisdom? Look for the simple things first.

Ck the charge rate at the battery posts. The proper range is 23.6 to 14.2v , The higher the voltage the llower the amps. Ie; at 13v Alternator is about 10% under capacity. @ 12v it is charging at max capacity. @ 15 v isthe alt is not charging but frying your battery. 9amps is ok if battery is fairly charged but at start up it should sit on 13-13.6 volts. for about 15 seconds the start climbing to less charge towards 14.2.

F5TF-19B132-BA Ford Radio Pin out

The stereo pin layout can be obtained from the car dealership, also a repair manual should have the stereo wiring harness layout in it , the stereo harness adapter for installing non oem stereo, found at the local auto parts store will come with the wiring layout, wires are color coded too, sometimes the stereo harness or stereo harness adapter will have small writing on the wires itself, showing you what that wire is for, and where it should connect.

Basically it comes down to, obtaining the stereo wiring layout, read the description on the wires, and properly connect them together, then solder the wires or crimp them, I like to solder mine with soldering wire for electronics, and put shrink tubes to protect the wires, put the shrink tubes on the wires before soldering together, and ensure the shrink tube is the proper size awg wire gauge.

You will also need, aftermarket face adapter kit and antenna adapter, if installing aftermarket stereo.

Hope this helps and enjoy the stereo :)

I have a kenwood kdc-mp335 and when hooking it up i get no power to the head unit what could this be

is this a new install.
if yes, buy the adapter harness, all auto stores sell this.
makes connections easy and has ,"instructions"
the red wire to the new head is red, and most go to the correct
harness wire, for radio power, on the geo that is RADIO fuse.
that goes to ignition on , connection. so fuse must be hot.
and key on. and radio grounded (black) to play

Changed Radio and now car won't start

What stereo did you use as a replacement? If you used a aftermarket (kenwood, sony, etc) cd player, you need to use the proper adapter harness. These cars have a build in theft deterrent system that involves the stereo. So, when you replace the stereo, a component of your anti theft system is missing. The use of the harness gets around this feature somehow, and allows you to use aftermarket CD players. Also, ensure that no wires are getting pinched behind the stereo, and that all your connections are soldered and shrink wrapped to avoid any future problems. I have provided a link for the correct adapter harness to your vehicle.

How to hook up a kdc-105 kenwood in a sunfire

There are 3 things you need to purchase for this install. 1) The factory spec install kit. 2) The factory spec additional wiring harness. 3) Antenna adapter.

Find the easied way to remove the plastic cowling around the radio and ac controls. Usually you can locate screws helping to retain the plastic dash parts. Be careful not to break the plastic dash by taking your time and looking over and over the part ofr connection hardware. Once you have located and removed all/if any screws, carefully pry out on the piece you are removing. There are often metal clips on the back of the piece that also help to retain the dash. Once that is removed, unbolt/unclip the factory stereo and slowly pull it out of the dash. Remove the factory harness from the backside of the factory stereo. DO NOT CUT THE HARNESS!! The wiring harness you have purchased is designed to plug and play into the factory harness. All you hae to do is color match the Kenwoods harness with the one you purchased. When wiring the two harnesses together use connectors **** a **** connectors, crimp connectors so forth and so on. If there is wiring you will not be using, take some electrical tape and tape the bare wire. We don't want a short. Once you are sure and have doubled checked that all the wiring is secure and matched, reverse the order of disassembly.

The plastic install kit should replace the factory radio size difference. Just remember to take the metal sleeve tha came with the kenwood and install it into the plastic install kit via the instructions provided. Slide the Aftermarket stereo into the sleeve you just installed. Then you are ready to make all the needed connections. Before you reassemble everything make sure to do a test run with your stereo. If all is well reassemble and jam on.
