97 ford explorer not starting in cold

It seems the battery is slightly low but had it running earlier in the day with cold temps in the single digits to about 13 degrees.ran fine then and about 6 hrs later it would not start,i had half tank of gas with a bottle of heet for anti-freezing.it cranks but will not kick over ,so i stopped due to noticing the battery lowering. could it just be the battery?

I'd guess bad battery cell. It'll take a charge but won't hold it. I'd take the battery to the auto store to check.

A weak battery will not spin the engine fast enough to start it. Replace the battery and make sure that all of the connections are clean and tight especially in cold weather.

You are right. Its the key code problem. As per the manual it says:--- sometimes when the battery is disconnected or has to be recharged - this happens. The computer forgets the key code and the key has to be re-coded. The ford service center/dealer charge $35 to $50 for recoding the key and this makes the car to function properly and it starts . ---------------- Also check the code in your car:--- under the plastic-passenger side under the very back window-next to rear passenger door jam-Looks like a black box. The Original Code is on a tag on that box.But if its not there then dealer is other option/.It takes few minutes to get recoded.----------------This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

My 97 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition V8 engine is shaking, running rough and low idling. What could be the problem?

Seems like there might be a vacume leak, mass air flow sensor dirty or bad ignation coil/s. Yeh one thing very important check the fuel pressure.

I HAVE A 1998 FORD EXPLORE 4.0 SOHC CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON CODE PO117 COOLANT TEMP SENSOR 1 CIRCUIT LOW INPUT REPLACE IT AND IT CAME BACK ON SAME THING REPLACE IT AGAIN AND IT CAME BACK ON AGAIN WHAT...

When you replaced the part you needed to kill the old code by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes.

The cold start problem could definitely be the result of the coolant temp switch not working. Check whether you are replacing the correct switch. The dash gauge should be a different temperature switch than the switch that runs the computer controls. It is possible that you are putting a new switch into the wrong hole.

The alternative is the wire going from the correct switch is bad to the computer plug in. Check for corroded terminals. The computer needs to know the engine is cold before it goes into the "Cold start" sequence.

Radiator fan not stopping even when i turn off the car and remove the keys. this is leading to battery drain

Radiator fan is supposed to start working after the temp reaches a certain limit. And it is supposed to run til the temp reaches a certain lower limit. So when you switch off the engine and walk off the fans must be running to cool the water to that lower limit. Unless you seen that it runs well past that and does not stop at all. Does it start running when you start the engine? And runs throughout the time the car is running, which it should not. The relay seems to be out. It is this relay that controls the running of the fan. or the temp gauge. If the temp gauge is giving wrong temp then the relay has to keep working. Please check both, the relay and before that the temp gauge.
