Sounds like you have a loose or dirty connection on your battery cables. Make sure they are clean where they make contact to the battery post and that they are tight. If you can twist the cable on the post it is not tight enough. If the connection is dirty you can take a bit of sand paper and clean both the battery and the terminal connection. Once you clean them you can pour a little soda like coke on the terminals and posts ( sounds weird ) it will eat any corrosion that is on them away. Or you can mix some baking soda with some water and it does the same thing. If this does not work you could have a bad starter.
Make sure the battery cables are tight on the battery and the starter..

If you hear a mechanical hum then its either something with the starter or the battery. Charge your battery and see if its just a little too weak to turn the engine over. If that doesnt fix it, then you might have to replace the starter. Unless there is a serious mechanical issue, your engine shouldnt be the reason the starter can't get it to turn over.

On many cars, if the battery is dead, it locks the key in the ignition. Put a battery charger on the car or replace the battery and give it a shot.
Good luck.

if when you jump it starts its your batt if if keeps dying it your alternator the clicking sound is your statrer which means thats good try the batt when you buy a new one it will have a warranty soo if it dies because the alt you will get a new one batt for free (the alt charges the batt)

try jumpin it to double check its not the battery. if not check spark plugs. if that doesnt work then id safely say you'll either need a new starting motor or a fuel pump

I had the same problem with my 94 jetta, I would also have the alarm turn on as I connected the battery, if you lower the fuse box being careful not to disconnect anything, there is a box to the upper driver-side aria(that is if you are laying on your back looking up under the dash) this is the alarm control unit, there should be a white label on the wires indicating so (think it says alarm in German) theres a 6 pin(wire) connector and a 10 pin. unplug both connectors and look at the 6 pin connector. There is numbers where the wires are located on the connector, if you take a piece of wire and "bridge" wires 5 and 6 (The largest wires on the connector, red/red w/black stripe) your starter should work, any problem with the alarm system can cause the starter to be disabled. after bridging the wires or simply connecting them do not plug anything back into the alarm box, after this you standard vehicle alarm will be disabled permanently, but you will be able to start your car. If this dose not fix the problem you may have a defective starter, hope this helps.
