How to take the alternator off - 1986 Toyota Cressida

Yes, if the alternator fuse is blown, it can cause the alternator to appear as if it's not functioning properly when it's actually fine. The alternator fuse is a critical component of the charging system, as it protects the alternator and the rest of the electrical system from overloads and short circuits.
When the alternator fuse blows, it interrupts the flow of electrical current from the alternator to the battery and the rest of the vehicle's electrical system. As a result, the alternator cannot charge the battery or provide power to the vehicle's electrical components.
If you suspect a problem with your alternator but the alternator itself tests fine, it's a good idea to check the alternator fuse and the associated wiring. Replacing a blown fuse can often resolve charging issues and restore the proper functioning of the alternator and charging system.

Here is the procedure....



The CS130D alternator, used on these engines, is serviced as a complete assembly only.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
3. Remove the alternator from brace.
4. Remove the electrical connector from the alternator.
5. Remove the retaining bolts from the alternator.
6. Remove the protective boot from the alternator output "BAT" terminal and remove the nut. Disconnect the battery positive lead from the alternator.
7. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

To install:

1. Position the replacement alternator to the engine bracket.
2. Connect the battery positive lead to the alternator output "BAT" terminal and install the nut. Tighten the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Install the protective boot over the terminal.
3. Hand start the alternator front lower bolt and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
4. Install the alternator brace stud through the alternator flange and the bracket and tighten the brace stud to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
5. If equipped with the CS 144 alternator, install the inboard alternator bolt through the flange and into the alternator brace assembly and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
6. If equipped with the CS 130D alternator, tighten the rear brace bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
7. Plug in the electrical connector to the alternator.
8. Install the alternator front brace.
9. Install the serpentine drive belt to the alternator pulley.
10. Connect the negative battery terminal.

Remove the battery ground (negative) cable from the battery.

Remove the accessory drive belt.

Remove the alternator B+ terminal nut.

Remove the alternator B+ lead.

Remove the alternator electrical connector.

Remove the drive belt from the alternator.

Remove the alternator mounting bolts.

Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

To Install:

Install the alternator to the alternator bracket.

Install the alternator bolts. Tighten the alternator bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

Install the drive belt.

Install the alternator electrical connector.

Install the alternator B+ lead.

Install the alternator B+ terminal nut. Tighten the alternator B+ terminal nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

Install the battery ground (negative) cable to the battery.

Alternator REMOVAL 3.2L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Front splash shield
   • Alternator drive belt
   • Adjuster
   • Top alternator bolt
   • Alternator wiring connectors
   • Alternator

3.5L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
• Negative battery cable
• Accessory drive belt
• Alternator wiring connectors
• Alternator

INSTALLATION 3.2L Engine

1. Install or connect the following:
   • Alternator
   • Alternator wiring connectors
   • Top alternator bolt
   • Adjuster
   • Alternator drive belt. Tighten the alternator top bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and the adjuster lock bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
   • Front splash shield
   • Negative battery cable

3.5L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Install or connect the following:
   • Alternator. Tighten the 10mm bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) and the 8mm bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
   • Alternator wiring connectors
   • Accessory drive belt
   • Negative battery cable

Removal and Installation L4-2.5L (QR25DE) Engines To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Engine cover
   • Front/right-side engine undercover
   • Drive belt
   • Alternator harness connector
   • Engine ground wire from top mount
   • Alternator upper and lower mounting bolts
3. Set the alternator aside and remove the top mount.
4. Remove the alternator.

To Install:

1. Slide alternator in place.
2. Install or connect the following:
   • Alternator top mount
   • Alternator upper and lower mounting bolts
   • Engine ground wire from top mount
   • Alternator harness connector
   • Drive belt
   • Front/right-side engine undercover
   • Engine cover
   • Negative battery cable

V6-3.5L (VQ35) To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Drain coolant from the radiator into a suitable container.
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Radiator
   • Front/right-side engine under cover
   • Drive belt
   • Idler pulley
   • Alternator adjustable top mount
   • Alternator lower mount bolt and nuts
   • Alternator lower front bracket bolt
   • Alternator harness connectors
   • Alternator

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   • Alternator in place
   • Alternator harness connectors
   • Alternator lower front bracket bolt
   • Alternator lower mount bolt and nuts
   • Alternator adjustable top mount
   • Idler pulley
   • Drive belt
   • Front/right-side engine under cover
   • Radiator
2. Replace the engine coolant.
3. Connect the negative battery cable.
4. Start the engine and check for leaks.
5. Recheck coolant level and top off as needed.

Alternator - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
3. Remove the passenger side engine and transaxle splash shield.
4. Remove the alternator wiring harness bracket bolt from the rear of the alternator.
5. Disconnect the alternator electrical connector from the alternator.
6. Remove the ground wire nut and wire.
7. Remove the B terminal wire boot. Remove the B terminal nut and wire.
8. Loosen the inner and outer alternator to bracket mounting bolts.
9. Loosen the alternator adjustment lock bolt.
10. Turn the alternator adjustment bolt counterclockwise to loosen the belt.
11. Remove the belt from the alternator.
12. Remove the alternator lock bolt and washer.
13. Remove the inner alternator to bracket mounting bolt and two washers.
14. Remove the outer alternator to bracket mounting bolt and two washers.
15. Remove the alternator.
16. The installation is the reverse of removal.
17. Adjust the drive belt. For the procedure, please refer to General Information and Maintenance, Routine Maintenance and Tune-Up, Belts, Adjustment, Alternator.

Removal & Installation


Rotate the tensioner and remove the belt from around the alternator pulley


Detach the 2 connectors from the alternator


Slide the boot up to access the battery cable on the rear of the alternator


Remove the nut retaining the battery cable and . . .


. . . remove the battery cable from the post on the rear of the alternator


Remove the three alternator rear mounting bolts


Remove the two front alternator mounting bolts


Remove the alternator from the engine by carefully lifting it up and out of the engine compartment

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   
4. Tag and disconnect the wiring connectors from the rear (or side) of the alternator. To disconnect push-on type terminals, depress the lock tab and pull straight off.
   
5. On 3.8L and 4.6L engines, rotate the automatic tensioner away from the drive belt and disengage the drive belt from the alternator pulley. Remove the alternator brace.
   
6. On 3.8L engines, remove the alternator pivot bolts, top and bottom and remove the alternator.
   
7. On 5.0L engines, loosen the alternator pivot bolt and remove the adjusting bolt. Disengage the drive belt from the alternator pulley.
   
8. On 3.8L and 5.0L engines, remove the alternator pivot bolt and the alternator. On 4.6L engines, remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator.
   
9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. On 4.6L engines, tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 15–22 ft. lbs. (20–30 Nm) and the alternator brace bolts to 70–106 inch lbs. (8–12 Nm). In addition, on 5.0L engines, adjust the drive belt tension

Alternator - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

4.2L Engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect 2 alternator and voltage regulator electrical harness connectors at the alternator. To disconnect push-on type terminals, depress the lock tab and pull straight off.
3. Remove the positive battery cable nut and remove the positive battery cable at the alternator.
4. Rotate the drive belt tensioner away from the drive belt and remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley.
5. Remove 3 alternator retaining bolts and remove the alternator.

To install:

1. Place the alternator on the engine and install 3 alternator retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner away from the drive belt and install the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
3. Connect 2 alternator and voltage regulator electrical harness connectors.
4. Connect the positive battery cable to the alternator and install the nut and washer. Tighten the nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
5. Connect the negative battery cable.
6. Start the engine and check for proper charging system operation.

4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L Engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner away from the drive belt and remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley.
3. Detach the electrical harness connectors at the alternator assembly.
4. Disconnect the positive battery cable and remove the nut and washer.
5. Remove 2 front alternator bolts.
6. Remove the rear alternator support bracket retaining bolts and the support bracket.
7. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

To install:

1. Place the alternator in position and loosely install 2 front alternator retaining bolts.
2. Install the alternator bracket and 3 alternator bracket bolts. Tighten to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
3. Tighten 2 front alternator retaining bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
4. Connect 2 electrical harness connectors to the alternator assembly.
5. Connect the positive battery cable and install the nut and washer. Tighten the nut to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
6. Rotate the drive belt tensioner away from the drive belt and install the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.
8. Start the engine and check for proper charging system operation.

5.8L and 7.5L Gasoline Engines and 7.3L Diesel Engine

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Label and detach the connectors from the alternator.
3. Release the tensioner and remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley.
4. Remove the alternator retaining bolts.
5. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

To install:

1. Position the alternator and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-29 Nm).
2. Install the drive belt.
3. Attach the alternator connectors.
4. Connect the battery ground cable.
