I have a 1999 ford escort 1300cc manual.. The car won't start easily when cold, needs a 10min. warming to drive it.. It drives well, then suddenly cloggs, jumps and sometimes backfires.. I can sometimes smell something burning, like a wire or something.. I changed the sparks a month ago and used an STP full fuel system cleaner last time I fueled.. It went ok for sometime, but again with the problems and even worse.. Moreover, here in Egypt, Ford maintenance told me that they don't have the maintenance equipment of my escort anymore and mechanics here can't seem to fix it properly or even diagnose its main problem..

check fuse that controlls fuel
SOURCE: hard to start
when you first get into the car, turn the key on all the way till all the lights come on on the dash, but not far enough to start it , wait a minute, then crank it over, if it starts right up, then it is a fuel pressure problem, possibly your fuel pump. if it still wont start right up, your fuel lines from the tank may be clogged.

As the post said earlier they went to a ford shop.... I suggest to have your vehicle inspected elsewhere. maybe have your o rings replaced and your fuel system cleaned.
SOURCE: runs rough/worse, backfire sputters, smell fuel
make sure all wires are secure on the plugs. Make sure that if you bought the plugs aftermarket, that they are the suggested equipment from the Ford (http://www.car-stuff.com/carparts/fordtaurus20002000motorcraftmisp432154315.html Make sure the plugs (gap) were not damaged during installation. Check the firing order is correct. (1,4,2,5,3,6)
