Brake lights come on with headlights. 97 Jetta GL

Brake lights work ok with headlights off, but they come on and stay on when the headlights are turned on.

Probably somebody put the wrong type bulb in the taillight. I just had a similar problem. It usually is a dual filament bulb, with two solder "contacts" on the base. If a single filament bulb was put in it's place then the single center solder contact shorts out the two socket connectors.

I have a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GL and my brake lights stay on at night when I use my lights at night

I take it they switch off when u turn your lights off then? I would check to see if the double filament bulbs are in the correct way round. also check for corrosion in the bulbholder assembly and the plug

My 97 jetta brake lights stay on as well, and i've already replace the brake light switch more then once and i cant seem to find the problem.

The brake light switch on that car is adjustable.

If you look at the portion of it that is physicaly pressed down by the pedal it has a round bit that can be pulled out in order to reach the brake pedal sooner. to test this opperate the brake light switch plugged in but not installed. and see if the brake lights work correctly. if so push the adjustable part a little deeper in.

If this is not the case the wiring to the brake light switch could be pinched or shorted somewhere causing it to over ride the brake light switch.

Hope this is helpfull to you

1998 VW Jetta GL . When I Put My Hand Break Down , Brake Light On Dashboard Doesnt Come Off Completly , In That Case HeadLights Wont Come On When HeadLight Swtich Is On .

the emergency brake needs adjusting. the cover around the e-brake should be removed, and behind the e-brake arm should be a cable and tighten the nut on the end of the cable until the slack is removed from the cable. turn nut, then turn key to accessory, then release e-brake , see if the brake light goes off, if not turn off ignition, tighten e-brake nut again, turn key back to accessory release e-brake, see if light goes off. do this until you see e-brake light on dash go out. headlights should come on.

Rear tail and brake lights out 97 Jetta

I believe this car has a bulb with two fillaments for side and brake lights, it is unlikely that they are both burnt out at the same time but possible. It is more likely that the bulb holder or a ground connection is rusted or loose. The fuse generally covers all rear lights.

Brake light switch. They are notorious for this. They recalled the 99s because of it.

Brake lights stay on when my head lights are turned on? 1998 vwgl

Check the tail light bulbs, One may be shorted & feeding voltage to brake lights. Check sockets & wiring. Yes, the brake light switch is above the foot brake.

Headlights wont come on and bright lights won't stay on hold bright light switch and blower works

I had the same problem. The solution is simple; the ignition switch needs to be replaced. This is an easy do-it-yourself project. Here are instructions:

Check for a switch on ebay, they are about $15. After 10 years they wear out.
