OK well it sounds like the good clear the codes trick that many people do before they sell there car. Nobody likes buying a car with a check light on so they clear the code and there good for a little more time before the cars sensor picks up the issue again. With my experience with cars is if you have a check light on then you have a emissions system issue. Since you just bought the car do your major tune up. Major tuneup meaning spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap and ignition rotor, pcv, air filter, oil change, fuel filter, and if you really have time and money transmission filter/oil, coolant, thermostat and last a fuel injection cleaner bottle, this will give you a good sense that your starting fresh. And if you still have them codes coming up your gonna need to buy a service tech manual and a multi volt meter to eliminate guessing on what your car situation.
On the 4 cylinder engines the spark plugs are located on the top of the engine, but not visible. There should be a cover that tells you that it is DOHC 16valve or whatever it may be.The spark plugs are located under this cover. The spark plugs will have a boots instead of a wires. go to ehow.com/how_4484637_replace-spark-plugs-oldsmobile-alero.html, this site will tell how to change plugs on, aleros different size engines. have a good day !!
Your Intrigue is equipped with the 3800 V-6 motor...The motor is mounted transversely...(sideways:) You can trace the spark plug wires from the spark box to each of the 6 plugs...I recommend you use AC platinum tip plugs, verify the gap...should be 45 mm...spark plug gap tools are inexpensive and available at all parts stores...Use thread lubricant...and plug wire tip lubricant...As your mileage is over 80,000 you should also consider replacing the wires too...:)
these cars have what they call dis system. connected to the computer is an e.s.t. sensor, this controls the injectors an spark going to the plugs. the e.s.t reads a magnetic signal from the camshaft. A bad e.s.t. sensor can cause tons of problems. they are a lot cheaper to replace than injectors.
