Torque Settings - Cylinder Head

All I want are the tightening sequence and the torque settings for VW Caravelle 1998 2.6? I have no idea why I'm getting Chevy info. It's a VolksWagon!!!

SOURCE: I need the torque specs and sequence on a 1998 chevy 350 vortec

Vortecs are a little different that old school small blocks, grab a Haynes or Chiltons, the cross patterns and specs are simply diagramed. Vortec, as any really, start with 25# then 45# and then final torque which I believe is around 70-75# but to be sure verify with the manual. AutoZones, Murry's, Adavance auto all carry the books, Cheap insurance.

There's two engine's, your car could have, 2.2L or 2.4L. so here's both, cylinder head torque for 2.4L engine.
Step # 1
Bolt's 1 - 8 40 Ft.Lbs
Bolt's 9 - 10 30 Ft.Lbs

Step # 2
All bolt's additional 90deg.

99 chevy malibu v6 3.1 engine, head bolt torque is-- 98 through 2001 is step1- 37 foot lbs, step 2- rotate an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn). the rocker arm bolts are 168-in. lbs.

Since you didn't say which engine you have, I've pulled torque specs for 3 different engines. Also, since I can't include a diagram showing the relative locations of the numbered head-bolt locations, it would be a good idea for you to purchase a vehicle specific repair guide that will show this info.


Take particular note about the TTY (Torque to Yield) bolts used on 2 of the 3 engines shown. It is said that new head bolts MUST BE USED when head is replaced or re-installed to obtain the proper torque.



B2500 4 Cylinder

Install the bolts and tighten in sequence and in 3 steps as follows:

  1. First step to 26 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  2. Second step to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Final step to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

Head bolt tighting sequance for a jeep 4.0


CAUTION: During the final tightening sequence, bolt No.11 will be tightened to a lower torque than the rest of the bolts. DO NOT overtighten bolt No.11.

  • Tighten all bolts in sequence (1 through 14) to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) torque.
  • Tighten all bolts in sequence (1 through 14) to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque.
  • Check all bolts to verify they are set to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque.
  • Tighten bolts in sequence:
  • Bolts l through 10 to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) torque.
  • Bolt 11 to 13 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) torque.

I found two pieces of information, but no picture showing the sequence, but hopefully this will help.


Tighten bolt 1 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 2 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 3 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 4 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 5 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 6 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 7 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 8 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 9 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
Tighten bolt 10 (stud bolt) to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
Then tighten all bolts an additional 90 degrees

For the 2.2L engine. First Pass Long bolts 46 ft. lbs Short bolts 43 ft. lbs Final Pass Tighten all bolts an additional 90 degree turn.
