1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport will not run correctly after replacing alternator

My husband left the lights on in the car and the battery died, the next day we tried to jump it off and it wouldnt start. So we had the alternator tested and found that it was no longer working, and so we replaced it. After installing the alternator we still couldnt get it to start, so we jumped it off. When we disconnected the cables it died again. so we jumped it one more time and still couldnt get it to stay on once we disconnected the cables. So we ran a wire from the alternator to the battery which created a shortcut that would allow the car to stay on. I need to know how to fix it to where we dont need that wire. Also once we tried to drive it after doing the shortcut wire, reverse worked fine, but when in drive, Low, or 2nd it wont go over 1000-2000 rpms. When I press the gas pedal it bogs out and when i let off it plunges forward some. It will sometimes work fine for a couple of blocks until i have to stop or slow down to turn and then it will start acting up again. PLEASE HELP

My first thought was that when he replaced the alternator, he tightened up the bolt that holds the wire on too tight, snapping off the wire on the inside, these are to be only snug, not really tight. I now would have to say that the alt is grounding out on the inside, causing a short between battery hot and ground, which means charge sometimes, sometimes not with the shortcut wire on. Check to make sure your battery is in good condition and will hold a charge. Do not tighten that wire down real tight, its easy to break off. Once the lock washer flattens out, give 1/16 of a turn, no more.

If you have spark, try changing the fuel filter. If you don't have spark, get back to me.

check if the fuel pump is working, if you have someone near the tank and someone else crank motor you should be able to hear a bzzzzzz rom the tank from the pump. if no noise is heard then hit or thump the tank, this can make a fuel pump start to work again, if it starts, then the pump is almost dead

The battery/ brake light was caused by the alternator. so make sure the battery is good and good connections. turn the headlights on and be sure they are bright.

Presuming the alternator to be okay, the next logical source for your problem is the alternator voltage regulator. The alternator voltage on cars of your vintage is usually controlled by the engine management computer. The problem could also be in the wiring between the alternator and the battery or between the alternator and its regulator. The one thing for certain is that your problems are all created by the low voltage condition that indicates that no power is coming from the alternator to run the vehicle's electronics. Contrary to popular belief, the alternator does not charge the battery, rather, once the vehicle is running the alternator powers all of the equipment.

I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero . Alternator problems

Verify your connections at the battery, not just for being tight but for corrosion as well, on the terminal and the cable.

Also check for oil on the bottom of the alternator. The right hand cam seal is notorious for leaking directly onto the alternator, killing them quickly.

That all being said, I haven't seen an aftermarket alternator last on a Montero for more than a month or two; so if your new ones are not OEM, you might consider getting a genuine one if your corrosion and oil leak checks are OK.

2003 montero sport. will not idle since battey boost

sit with foot on gas at steady 3000 rpm, then turn on all your lights, hazard warning lights, heater, and window defrost, if the power drops , then you need a new battery....sometimes the battery power can control the engine idle, the alternator is only for charging the battery, not for running the cars electrics, this is the battery's job

Two areas to consider are the MAP sensor and the Idle Control Valve, both pricey items for your vehicle. I'd go to a local autoparts chain and see if they can run a free diagnostic test for you. The codes will point you in the right direction.
