My husband left the lights on in the car and the battery died, the next day we tried to jump it off and it wouldnt start. So we had the alternator tested and found that it was no longer working, and so we replaced it. After installing the alternator we still couldnt get it to start, so we jumped it off. When we disconnected the cables it died again. so we jumped it one more time and still couldnt get it to stay on once we disconnected the cables. So we ran a wire from the alternator to the battery which created a shortcut that would allow the car to stay on. I need to know how to fix it to where we dont need that wire. Also once we tried to drive it after doing the shortcut wire, reverse worked fine, but when in drive, Low, or 2nd it wont go over 1000-2000 rpms. When I press the gas pedal it bogs out and when i let off it plunges forward some. It will sometimes work fine for a couple of blocks until i have to stop or slow down to turn and then it will start acting up again. PLEASE HELP
My first thought was that when he replaced the alternator, he tightened up the bolt that holds the wire on too tight, snapping off the wire on the inside, these are to be only snug, not really tight. I now would have to say that the alt is grounding out on the inside, causing a short between battery hot and ground, which means charge sometimes, sometimes not with the shortcut wire on. Check to make sure your battery is in good condition and will hold a charge. Do not tighten that wire down real tight, its easy to break off. Once the lock washer flattens out, give 1/16 of a turn, no more.

If you have spark, try changing the fuel filter. If you don't have spark, get back to me.

check if the fuel pump is working, if you have someone near the tank and someone else crank motor you should be able to hear a bzzzzzz rom the tank from the pump. if no noise is heard then hit or thump the tank, this can make a fuel pump start to work again, if it starts, then the pump is almost dead

The battery/ brake light was caused by the alternator. so make sure the battery is good and good connections. turn the headlights on and be sure they are bright.
