Downshifted from 4th to 3rd and both gears went out?

Downshifted from 4th to 3rd and both gears went "soft" like they weren't even there. All other gears work. It smelled this morning and I've noticed that it's gotten "clunky" when I shift over the past couple months. Also, the shift indicator light has been coming on when I'm in 5th when I don't need to shift. All seems related now.

Get your codes first. as three things in your transmission can go wrong.the pressure sensor.the governor pressure sensor is failing.and your filter in the box very dirty and needing changed .so get the codes first cheaper.

SOURCE: 02 jeep liberty won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear.

Ratio codes generally indicate a pressure loss & slipping which the computer reads as a gear ratio problem. Likely you need a rebuild.

Have a code check done and see if speed sensor or controller is working properly. if bought from a dealer, get it back there asap...they can't sell it in that condition!!...No test drive before you ploped down your money?

Hi,

This might be because of the gear box problem. By any chance, did your car face flooding? In such cases, please drain the gear box and replace it with new gear fluids. Also, check if you go in low speeds, you might be able to engage it with ease. Please come back to me if you feel this doesnt solve your issue.

Hari

SOURCE: I had a mechanic come

I don't know how you thought he could fix that leak when the trans has to come out? Take it to a transmission shop and stop guessing, and replacing perfectly good parts. Have the trans shop replace the rear seal while the trans is out.

Did you air check it as you went? Maybe put the seals in backwards? Clipped a seal while installing it. Could be the sevro's needed reamed out and inserts put in place. Check TSB's on this.

It sounds like you might have a bad busing in your shift linkage. The run from the bottom of your shifter to the transmission check those bushings and make sure that everything is in place under your shifter. Hope that helps you.

Symptoms are those of a clutch up for replacement. There's a thin layer of clutch plate left before the rivets holding the plates hit the metal clutch surface. The effects you describe are quite normal.

There are 2 flavors of clutch replacement - new and refurbished. Both usually can be obtained through a WV dealer. The difference is usually warranty and price.

96 lt-1, 4L60. 3rd and 4th gears went out. tried solenoids, no help. figured clutch pkg, replaced tranny. worked for about 10 miles, no 3rd or 4th again. replaced pcm, no help. what is it?

Could be the Igniton switch, but that would make it where it would only have 3rd gear. Do you think maybe it's not using 1 &2 and you are feeling 3rd thinking it is a lower gear.
If the swich isn't giving power to the transmission then that may be your problem
