Rear wheels heating up

star wheel is shoe adjuster to adjust cable look under vehicle around driver side seat will see a single cable with two cables going towards the rear of vehicle undue nut and that will slack the cables and visa versa

Sound like you over heated the the rotors and now there are worpped ..
You need to replace at least all parts in the fronts rotors pads and the calipers do the whole thing .
These parts are so cheap now a days their made in china . WE ARE TALKING 50 DOLLARS A SIDE FOR PARTS

Lock up when?

If you use the parking brake,then the cables
have to be replaced because of rust.

With proper brake maintenance once a year, there is no
reason to say they lock up while driving

This definitely sounds like a wheel bearing going out, or possibly the rear brake shoes/pads are worn out. Either way you will have to take the wheels off to determine the cause of the noise. Changing the wheel bearing or brake shoes/pads is not that difficult of a job and with the right instructions, you will be back on the road in no time. After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

If the car has drum brakes in the rear, Jack the rear up and have someone push the brake pedal hard and you try to turn the wheel. If you can turn it you need to adjust the rear shoes. They may be traveling out so far that the fluid level drops causing the pedal to go to the floor. You must adjust them with the drum on till you hear and feel the shoes rubbing against the drum. Drum Removal

1. Remove the rear wheel and the tire assembly. Refer to Section 204-04 .

1. Retract the brake shoes and loosen the brake adjuster screw.

1. Remove the brake drum.

May require big hammer to loosen drum from axle flange. Hit between the the lugs, not on them.

1. Remove the brake drum, refer to Drum in this section.

1. Remove the upper retracting spring.

1. Remove the lower retracting spring.

1. Remove the self-adjuster.

1. Remove the hold-down springs.

1. Remove the parking brake lever clip and the parking brake lever.

The rear drum brakes:

• Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
• Are a single-anchor type.
• Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
• Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
• Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
• Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.

When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .

raise the vehicle and check the rear wheel bearings,spin the wheel while putting your hand on the rear axle you should feel the noise or check for play or movement in the rear bearing. hope this helps,please rate my fix

sounds like you have over adjusted the brake shoes, they are very tricky to get the balance just right and after a drive they expand from the heat. so remove the rear wheel & back off the adjustment a few turns then go for a drive to get some heat into them. jack car up and check by turning wheel with your hands, it should move freely, there will be a little resistance from turning the diff. hope this helps.
