Power Steering I had been adding power steering fluid to my Rover for a few months but the other day - it no longer fixed the problem and it is like driving a tank and frankly impossible to turn. What would you suggest I do? Thanks for your help with this...

SOURCE: lost my fluid from my power steering

normally what it is its not the power steering reservour itself but the hose has gone bad fill it back up with fluid put the cap back on and while the car is running turn the wheel left and right several times and this will get the air out of the system and at the same time help you find the leak

SOURCE: 1995 Land rover discovery leaking power steering fluid.

the steering boxes on those were leaky messes, seal kits, rebuilt and new units are availible. expect a couple hours for a good mechanic to remove and replace, resealing takes a longer once the unit is out. be sure to also check the steering hoses and pipes for leaks, pretty much everything is located in the front left of the engine compartment. check out roversnorth.com and atlanticbritish.com for parts and prices. stay away from land rover dealers if you can to save on cost.

The Solenoid fitted on the Steering Rack is not getting the command from The Body Control Unit. Kindly Replace your BCM and then your problem is solved. You can try to make sure by giving direct current of 12v to the solenoid and check the Steering. if it works then simply change the BCM as it's not giving d command to the Solenoid. Salman EiD

Steering pump replaced twice this month. Gone out again.help

Elaine,
1. Heat oxidizes power steering fluid, causes pump failure. Unlikely to overheat this time of year but there could be a restriction on pressure side of system causing it to overheat.
2. Many mechanics use "power steering fluid". Some systems require specialty fluids, Mitsubishi and VW come to mind. Google the type of car you have and power steering fluid and see what it comes up with. If wrong fluid has been used make sure it is flushed out and new fluid is added.
3. Chinese parts and or bad installaitons. It happens.
Hope this helps.

2004 audi a4 quattro 3.0L. The noise came back after about a week of adding power steering fluid. ,(Still same question but tried specific power steering fluid and noise went away for a week, but now

check the condition of the pump drive belt as the cold weather makes it more difficult to flex and if it is worn or loose it may be your problem

I have a 1989 Nissan Bluebird SSS SR18 (Di) model KEU12NA1 Type E-EU12. I recently topped up the reservoir with an over the counter steering fluid which is transparent in color and not eh same color as...

all power steering fluid is the same actually us can use transmission fluid if u want
now being as you had to add fluid i would assume u have a leak some where in the system
you may be low on fluid also there probably air in system (when u have a leak it also allows air into system especially when you run low on fluid)
also if anyone ever put stop leak in system stop leak is a lot thicker oil and will take longer to heat up and thin out in cold weather to allow easy turning
first check for leaks repair if needed
if no leaks are found drain system add fresh power steering fluid
if that doesn't fix problem you have a bad power steering pump replace pump

My steering wheel is not turning properly. It is ...

If adding fluid helped, check again. Likely it's leaking out. In that case you need to find the source of the leak and fix it. Driving with no or low fluid will cause further damage to the system.

Can anyone tell why the steering may have gotton stiff in this truck ,it is drivable but very stiff as if i have partial power steering.

You probably do have partial power steering.
Check the power steering fluid level, if it's low fill it with the right kind of fluid.
Does it whine like you have the wheel turned all the way? could be the power steering pump needs to be replaced.

Added new power steering fluid to the old now my steering is hard

First question is : Was the fluid added marked as poere steering fluid? If so, it's odd that the steering would suddenly become hard. What I would do is disconnect the return line (the one that has a hose clamp on it, not a pressure fitting)
Drain the system there and refill with fresh fluid. Since the fluid has not been changed, you may want to do this twice after running it for a few minutes between changes. If this does not restore proper operation then the pump or steering rack has an internal problem and will need to be diagnosed by someone with experience.
