Question about Daihatsu Rocky

I'm trying to adjust the fuel pump timing on a 1988 diahatsu rocky, but it's still blowing smoke. Any idea's?

The pump has recently had an overhaul and I was told the two mounting bolts would let me move the pump from side to side to adjust the timing. The pump went in smoothly and is no longer leaking (hence the overhaul), but the timing's a little out.

Are you sure the pump has a timing adjustment on it? I have never heard of such a thing. Sounds like the timing description is for the distributor adjustment for timing.

Sounds like a leaking valve cover gasket. The parts are around $50 to do both cylinder heads from www.ecstuning.com. It's not a major issue, but it may be a sore point to a potential buyer.

SOURCE: White smoke exhaust

White smoke is caused by coolant or water coming out the tail pipe. There is a chance that the white smoke was caused by water splashing up from a puddle onto the exhaust pipe. Keep an eye on the coolant level in the radiator in any event. If its less then there leak coolant leak in the car engine which is causing this problem....

I have a 1982 Mitsubishi Lancer SL 1982. Just had top overhaul because of white smoke problems. But after top overhaul ,now it has low power and hesitation when accelerating. Spark plugs, distributor all...
if still billowing smoke [[burning coolant ]] the coolant being burnt with the fuel will knock horsepower to over 1/2 --have work that was done rechecked and tested since its still blowing white smoke wasnt fixed correctly --fuel +air + spark for combustion and power not coolant / water added

1988, time to send it to the wrecker... or put in a crate motor.

how much oil is it burning between oil changes?

only a few ways oil gets burnt in the exhaust.

1) worn out rings - overhaul (running thick oil might help a little)
2) worn out valve guides - overhaul (running thick oil might help a little)
3) blow by is forcing it into the PCV system - overhaul
4) crack somewhere between the oil gallery and the intake... this usally run really bad though...


yep kinda sums it up.... overhaul (replace or wrecker)

I put another engine in my 1988 ford 250 deisel and smokes a lot, I've changed The injection pump and reset the timing, Plenty of fuel and runs great but smokes unbelievably, What could I do to get it to...
Before you do the next oil change,get a can of motor flush.
This is the inexpensive method the free up the rings and restore some of the compression.
Use Shell 15W40 oil ==
Do you know the history of your replacement engine?
When was the last timing belt change?
A loose timing chain and guide can cause injector timing problem.

To save time,I would do a high rpm (below REDLINE) highway ran to blow off all remaining diesel SOOT.
Let the shop to do a compression test. DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELF.
The max psi is 1850 PSI
=== Stay away from biodiesel blend fuel until you figure out what's the cause of the problem.
Use Diesel Cleen silver bottle and see is there any improvement. ===
Add the recommend dose of SEAFOAM into the crankcase to soften the valve stem seal.
Leaky valve stem seal can introduce oil drop into the cyclinders over-night. =====
Mointor any oil lose from valve cover.

Is the smoke only from tail pipe?

4 wheel drive power button
Unless your rocky was custom or rebuild, the four wheel drive on the 90-92 rocky is not auto engage. it is manual. you have to use the four wheel gear shifter located left of the main gear shifter.

the white smoke is oil smoke,check your valve stem seals,if they are bad it will smoke till it burns the oil that leaked by when it was sitting.as far as it stalling in the morning check your choke it may need adjusting.
