Transmission fluid I have a 98 Chevy tracker, it's got an automatic transmission. It whines like it's dry of transmission fluid and it does it in, both, park and in gear

I can't answer your question - I am the worst auto trans expert ever but early autos did have a vacuum unit and a connection to the engine intake and I suppose under certain conditions, if the diaphragm failed, which they did sometimes (mostly on carburettered engines), some fluid could be pulled into the engine intake though in more than 40 years as a repairer I have never heard of it.

As electronic engine management became more common, electronic control began to be integrated into the automatic transmissions so they could "talk" to each other and as these systems became more sophisticated there was less need for a vacuum line (or any other mechanical connection).

Would start by checking linkage or the cable that runs to tranny. Tranny fluid level is correct? Check fluid level first. Run 15-20 mins and check with motor warmed and running

Transmission pump starting to fail. Funny you mentioned "power steering PUMP" although its not really funny as in HA HA. :(

Could be your alternator or a bad idler pulley. Is the transmission good? It may be the tranny or your differential whining.

Check your power steering fluid level. If it is low that is probably what is causing the noise. The pump is running dry. If that is the problem it means you have a leak somewhere. I have had this issue with my Focus for awhile. I just check the fluid often. I don't fix things until I absolutely have to. Check your manual my Focus uses transmission fluid for the power steering system.

Either the transmission fluid is low, or just worn out and broken down.

Sounds like a bad countershaft bearing. The trans will need removed and disassembled to fix it.

synthetic SAE 75W-90 GL-4 GEAR OIL

Make sure you have enough fluid, and honestly, regardless of the fluid level, change it and put in new transmission fluid. If it's an automatic, change the transmission filter too. You can try adding some Lucas stabilizer as well. If that doesn't do it, you may be looking at a rebuild or replacement.
