1997 chevy blazer ignition switch

I own a 1997 chevy blazer, 4x4, and my ignition switch/ lock cylinder keeps blowing, resulting in i cannot get my key out of the ignition, and my check engine light is on, and my blazer does not start in first gear, when i go, it starts out in 2nd or third gear. The switch blew about three months ago, and i replaced it with a brand new one, and it blew again, so i am looking for a reason why it keeps blowing on me. any ideas?

I have the same problem but I don't think my switch has blown. It will exhibit the problem with the key, the light on the dash and the shifting. Mine will start in what feels like 2nd or 3rd gear if I put it in low and it will shift to 3rd(I think) when I manually move the lever but won't go into final or lockup (D). Then......it will work perfectly for a while and everything works perfectly, then.....it all comes back. What the H???? Joe

You have a short in one of your wires, on the lock cylinder. And if it goes into 3rd gear safety mode, you have a problem with your ignition switch too.

SOURCE: ignition switch

You wrote ignition switch/lock cylinder. Which part did you replace? The ignition switch or the ignition lock cylinder? The electrical ignition switch is what is bad.

SOURCE: ignition lock cylinder keeps blowing

I don't think the key and tumbler is your problem at all. The switch is down on your steering column. It's either loose and sliding around when the rod pulls, or it's wrecked. They can cause all kinds of problems. Just drop your steering column and take a look.

How do I remove the steering wheel from a 1997 Chevy blazer?

Hi,

If you are trying to remove the steering wheel to change the ignition switch, then you may not have to. The switch is on the steering column about 1/2 down towards the floor, and has a rod that runs from the key cylinder & locking part. You dont need to remove the steering wheel, but if you do so, I suggest you to take some help from some Paint and Body shop so that they can direct you to do it properly and safely.

Do let me know if it helped.

My 1997 chevy blazer does not have a 4wheel drive switch

If there is no switch present then it is full time 4X4, it does not disengage, good for travel bad for fuel mileage.

1999 Chevy S10 Blazer 4x4. Replacing rear pad's,& Bleeding Breaks

have one person in the blazer pumping the brake pedal and then hold to the floor, crack the bleeder then tighten, release pedal, repeat till all air is out one side at a time, if this does not work then your ABS unit is bad witch if u follow your lines from your master cylinder u will find a black box with a motor on it, or the master cylinder itself is bad, it also can cause u to have no pedal, replace the master cylinder first, most likely cheaper.
