Chevy Prizm Hood Is Stuck Closed

The hood on my 1999 Chevy Prizm is stuck closed. Pulling on the hood release latch inside the car does nothing. How can I manually open the hood?

  • Kim Rinde Dec 06, 2013

The hood cable is still attached to the latch inside the car.

SOURCE: i have a broken hood latch and the hood is down

I think your cable came loose from the latch. try to see it through the grill, maybe you can get to it with a long flat tip screwdriver

SOURCE: hood latch

Try spraying the latch mechanism with WD-40 or similar light oil and operating the release cable a number of times. Check the condition of the release cable if nothing happens. The latch itself may have a broken spring due to the low temps.

SOURCE: hood will NOT shut or latch close

Use a long flathead screwdriver to push on the bullet on the end of the cable. You can see it under the spring on the latch. After extending the cable, the hood will latch when closed.

Hood stuck will not lease from latch

If the hood of your vehicle is stuck and will not release from the latch, there could be several possible causes. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
  1. Check the latch: Make sure the latch is not damaged or stuck in the closed position. If the latch is damaged, you may need to replace it. If it is just stuck, try lubricating it with a penetrating oil or WD-40 to loosen it up.
  2. Check the hood release cable: The hood release cable may be damaged or disconnected. Check the cable to make sure it is not broken or frayed, and that it is properly connected at both ends.
  3. Check the hinges: The hinges that hold the hood in place may be damaged or corroded, causing the hood to stick. Inspect the hinges and lubricate them with a penetrating oil or WD-40 if they are sticking.
  4. Check the hood itself: The hood may be misaligned or bent, causing it to stick in the closed position. Inspect the hood and try gently adjusting it to see if that helps.
If you have tried these troubleshooting steps and are still unable to release the hood, it may be best to seek the help of a qualified mechanic who can diagnose and fix the problem.

Hood will not open

If the cable is broken or the latch is stuck, you will probably have to remove the lower air shield at the front of the car and reach up and manually release it. If it is just stuck, you can try gently bouncing the front of the hood while pulling up on it while someone is pulling on the release. When you get it open, lubricate the latch assembly.

Can't open the hood by pulling hood release

Cable is stretched/sprung. Access hood release panel and pull cable with channel locks.. or worse, something is stuck in the latch mechanism under hood.
See repair rep at Ford in any case.

Hood Release 1998 Land Rover Discovery I

You can adjust release on front brace by loosening bolts and setting it. I grease all my latches with moly grease. And lube cable under dash shield.

Hood does not open

The latch could be stuck or the cable broke. You might try bumping the hood with someone pulling on the release.
Otherwise you may have to remove the grille to access the latch.

Hood latch is pulled open but hood is stuck closed how do I get the latch to release.

Have one person pull on the latch inside and the other person pull up on the hood (sometimes depending may have to use a thin screwdriver to pry up carefully not to chip the paint). Once open lube the hood latch under the hood with wd-40. Make sure the latch inside is still connected to the wire.

Hood release under the dash has no tension on it. Hood will not latch closed

The latch is stuck in the open position. I always found white lithium grease worked best on those latches but any good lubricant will work. Try moving the latch manually with a screwdriver. After applying the lubricant move the latch a few times. You should see the tension return to the release, if it doesn't you have a broken release cable.
