My 2003 Nissan Sentra won't switch gears; it is stuck on park. The car turns on and off fine but still won't move. There is a that button you press when you try to switch gears but it appears to be stuck as well. Every time I press it, it make a clicking sound near the steering wheel. How can I get it the gear to move or unlock? Could it be the transmission?
I think your brake shift interlock solenoid is not releasing the Park position when you apply the brake.
Check for a blown fuse first. see owner manual for location of fuse.
Also, check owner manual for how to manually bypass the interlock.
When you step on the brake pedal, it activates a solenoid that unlocks the shift linkage cable so it will move. It is a safety feature to ensure you have you foot on the brake and not the gas, as you shift out of park.

Sounds like the PARK / BRAKE SOLENOID is inop. Located by brake pedal ( which is probably what you are hearing clicking ) Hope this helps.
My problem involves 2004 x-trail. Told problem was solenoid on transmission, also told need new battery. Main dealer wanted 990 pounds to fix new solenoid unit, however having replaced battery at half cost main dealer was asking, the problem with the solenoid seems to have improved and we are monitoring the situation at present. has anyone else had similar experience, not sure whether solenoid unit now needs replacing or not, had been using manual override button 100 per cent before new battery brought a few days ago.
I agree with the previous diagnosis regarding the solenoid. However, on a 1991 Maxima there is an overide button at the base of the shifter. It is on the front. The shifter will be released each time you press the button. You will have to press the overide button as well as the normal shift release button on the side of the handle.

the problem is the park interlock safety mechanism is sticking,( keeps u from shifting out of park unless the brake is pressed) it has nohing to do with restarting the engine several times. Check and verify the brake lights work is the first thing to do.

Try replacing the transmission filter and the trannie fluid. Mine would only go in reverse, and now it drives pretty well. This year has a screw on filter. Hope this helps

I'm afraid your transmission is in lock-up mode. Do the basics...check oil level and condition then try removing the battery negative terminal for 10 minutes then put it on let the car idle for 10minutes and then go for a drive to see. If problem still there then you;ll have to bring it to your local dealer for a transmission diagnostic.

shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has
to be open and realign.

Is your steering wheel locked? I find that sometimes I need to pull my steering wheel over a little bit before the car will shift just after starting up. Otherwise I'm not sure what the problem could be :(
