The only thing that is different now when I start the vehicle is that there is a high pitched whine coming from underneath the vehicle.

The first and also the cheapest way to attempt to diagnose this problem, would be to replace the lube in the transmission with the specified type in the manual. You did say it looked burnt, but are there any metal shavings or something like that?

FYI, My 99' just had a rebuild put in it $2000. Lent it to family, and even before they left I was worried that mileage etc, was just about time for it to go. I had no warning signs, just something in the back of my mind said "anytime now". They made it to their destination 3 or 4 hours away, no problem all the way, then next morning running into town for groceries, spit, sputter clank, bang, done ! Piece came right out through the top of the transmission casing , big hole & a gear laying on top of the casing. Needless to say, they felt bad, but I just had a premonition it was time. That's why when those things act up, don't play around, get it diagnosed a.s.a.p. Trying to get through the week, can cost you big time. Here's to hoping yours is an easy, inexpensive fix.

I know you don't want to hear this but the forward clutch pack has failed, that is either due to wear or a loose of hydraulic fluid pressure inside the trans, pull the pan and look for debris in the pan, if that is only normal small amounts of black goop then the problem is a failed seal in the pressure passages, in any case the trans has to come apart to fix it, so an overhaul will be required. this trans is prone to failure around 100,000 miles. my experience 40 years as an automotive tech, master certified automatic trans technician.
